The lively little village of Plouguenast sits prettily amid the stunning Breton countryside in the Côtes-d'Armor. Equipped with excellent local amenities, the village is nevertheless typically rural in atmosphere, and offers a delightful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in busy Britain. Plouguenast also enjoys an enviable location close to many of Brittany's favourite destinations. It's easy to reach from the UK too, thanks to the ferry port of St Malo and the airport of Dinard.
While there are lots of small French villages that have little in the way of shops and amenities, Plouguenast isn't one of them. Surprisingly well equipped for its diminutive size, Plouguenast has small shops, a supermarket, a pharmacy and medical services, a bank, florists, hairdressers, a petrol station and a primary school. There are also restaurants and bars for those times you feel like getting out for a treat. Bicycles and canoes can also be hired from the village.
In common with most Breton communities, Plouguenast hosts cultural events throughout the year. So if you're around at the right time you can enjoy fetes and festivals.
Plouguenast has a heritage to be proud of. With the first signs of occupation being traced right back to Neolithic times, the village offers up a patrimony including churches and a manor house. The natural heritage is equally remarkable. Unspoilt and beautiful, the countryside surrounding the village offers up rivers, lakes and forests.
This part of Brittany seems to have been designed for those who enjoy getting outdoors and active. Daily activities on the doorstep might include the chance to go for a bike ride, a paddle down the river in a canoe, or a trip to the gorgeous leisure lake of Guerledan where you can swim, fish, sunbathe or take out a boat. Golfers can choose from no less than eight courses in the locality!
Plouguenast, being centrally located, offers ease of access to almost everywhere in the region. Nearby places worth a visit are mediaeval Moncontour, the market town of Loudeac, and Lamballe, where there is a national stud for Breton horses.
Should you fancy a trip to the lovely beaches of the Breton coast, it should take you around 25 minutes. Once there, lovely seaside resorts and beaches, fishing villages and cliff top walks await. And if you're heading for the coast, don't miss visiting the main town of St Brieuc and the never to be forgotten sight of Mont St Michel.
If a sea crossing is an essential part of a trip to France for you, then take a ferry to the port of St Malo. If you prefer to fly, the little airport at Dinard has direct flights from the UK. Approaching by road, the village lies on the D768. The nearest major road is the N164.
Brittany's popularity never fades. So, any investment in property here is likely to prove a good one. Prices did drop during the financial instability following the 2008 crisis, but have steadily risen since. They are still pretty reasonable though, and represent good value for money when compared with some other popular areas of France. It's currently possible to find a habitable home in Plouguenast for only just over 100,000 Euros.
