For buying and selling property in Saint Nicolas du Pélem
St Nicolas du Pélem, which lies in the delightful rolling and wooded countryside of the Côtes d'Armor department of northern Brittany, is neither quite a town nor quite a village, but rests somewhere between the two. In this respect, St Nicolas enjoys the best of both worlds, being an unspoiled and tranquil haven where it is possible to escape from the stresses of modern life, but also having good local facilities and easy access to larger towns and, of course, to the lovely Breton coast.
St Nicolas du Pélem is attractively traditional in style, with its old grey stone houses reflecting the life and culture of a Brittany that has long disappeared into the history books. Typically, the centrepiece of the town is a church and a main square, a gathering place for the residents where weddings and feast days are celebrated and where life can be observed passing by in an inimitable Breton fashion.
Amenities are excellent, with a supermarket, boulangerie, grocer's, post office, tabac presse and a tourist office which is the place to go if you want to know what is going on in the area. Then there are banks, florists, petrol stations, doctors, dentists... in short, just about everything you are likely to need. Don't forget to check out the restaurants too... this is France, and dining out is an essential pleasure!
Just on the edge of the town you can see the old Ramparts de Crenelles. These formed part of the unfinished fortifications that were begun in 1875. From here you can wander along the beautiful shady paths of the Forêt de Beaucours, discover a delightfully cool and peaceful lake (fishing allowed by permit), and then yet another lake that is overlooked by an atmospheric and highly recommended restaurant. If you think the area is finished with lakes, don't count your chickens yet, as an even larger lake looms into view a little further on, and here you can partake in water sports and indulge in a cruise... with dinner served on board!
Those seeking less watery activities will find golf courses, pony trekking stables, tennis courts and bicycles to hire, all within easy reach of Saint Nicolas.
There is so much to do and see in Brittany, and perhaps especially in this area, where the mediaeval towns vie with the mysterious forests and beautiful beaches for your attention. Visit the port town of St Malo, the fascinating town of Guingamp, or the mediaeval masterpiece that is Dinan. One thing is for sure, you will never be short of somewhere to go or something to do. The location of St Nicolas du Pélem is perfect for getting out and about in the Côtes d'Armor.
There is an airport at Dinard, and you can fly there direct with Ryanair or Aurigny Air. Those who prefer to travel by boat (and it is always a good idea to have a car so that you can explore more of this great region) can take the ferry to St Malo and then drive to their destination. If you are driving to St Nicolas du Pélem you will need to follow the N164, then find the town on the D4/D790.
Brittany is popular, as is the department of the Côtes d'Armor. Blessed with some of the best coastline in France, a colourful tradition and ease of access from the UK, it is hardly surprising that prices have risen in recent times. It is possible to find affordable property in and around St Nicolas though, you just have to know where to look. At the time of writing there are some very reasonably priced properties on the market, with several excellent properties priced at under a £100,000 Euros!
