Uzel - a tranquil Breton village

The picturesque little village of Uzel is found in the lovely countryside of the Côtes d'Armor department of Brittany in north-west France. Not a lot happens in Uzel, but that is just the way the residents like it, and those who choose to base themselves in the village for their holidays are drawn to its calm nature, authentic Breton atmosphere and lovely surroundings.

British boys arrive in summer

There is an influx of British boys who arrive in Uzel each summer, though, and this can liven things up a little! The boys come to stay in the school owned by the Devonshire High School for Boys in Plymouth, to learn firsthand about life in France and to absorb themselves in the language and culture.

Village life

Uzel is peaceful but by no means a ghost town. In fact, for its diminutive size the village offers good basic amenities, having local shops, a post office, pharmacy, bank, cafés, bars and even a restaurant. The town of Loudeac is just fifteen minutes away where you can find hypermarkets and a greater choice of restaurants and other facilities, but for everyday needs the village can cater quite well. Many of the local towns host traditional street markets, and almost every town or village has at least one annual party or fête which can be great fun to attend.

Out and about

As Uzel lies in lovely countryside there are few pleasures greater than just walking, driving or perhaps cycling (if you are feeling energetic!) and enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery. However, for those who like to get involved in sports, the nearby leisure lake of Guerlédan provides opportunities for swimming, sailing, fishing and more. The beaches and the sea are just a half hour drive away, and there are many wonderful towns to visit, including St Brieuc and the beautiful mediaeval town of Dinan.

How to get there

You can fly direct from the UK to either Dinard or Rennes, with Aurigny, Ryanair or Flybe. If you prefer the train, you can travel by train to St Brieuc. The nearest ferry port is St Malo, with a drive of about an hour and half bringing you to Uzel. The village can be located from the D35, D700 and D7, the N164 being the nearest major road.

Property prices and availability in and around Uzel

Prices around the village tend to be lower than those at the coast, with there being a number of possibilities to purchase renovation properties at a very reasonable cost, at the time of writing.
