Audierne - a vibrant fishing port

The fishing port of Audierne sits at the mouth of the River Goyen on the south side of a peninsula. With its seaside location, vibrant atmosphere and excellent amenities, the town is an idyllic holiday spot, with something to entertain all ages. Audierne has also perfectly preserved its character and heritage and remains picturesque and typically Breton.

Discover Audierne's heritage

Audierne has a good deal of original architecture, not of a grand, monumental style but authentic to the fishing villages of Finistère. Pastel-coloured fishermen's cottages define the town, but there are also elegant merchants' houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The maritime heritage includes two lighthouses (one working, one not) and an iron and wood towpath bridge, built to help tow ships into the harbour in bad weather. Then there's the Fenoux Mast (whose rooftop arrow, pointed ships safely home), and a faithful copy replica of a traditional lobster fishing boat.

Churches and tombs to visit

Audierne's religious heritage offers a fisherman's church, still in use today. You can also visit the granite Church of Saint Raymond, which has three distinctive stone boats carved into its walls. In addition to the churches, it's worth taking a look at the Mausoleum of M. Severin Louis Michel Duff and the tomb of Claude Mathio Guenzo.

Shopping, dining and things to do!

The town has excellent amenities. Many small shops adorn the winding little streets, as well as a good number of restaurants, where crepes, oysters and fresh fish from the port are always on the menu. Though if you like oysters, why not buy them straight from the town's oyster farm? Meanwhile a supermarket caters for everyday needs, and there are great markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The fishing port and the marina are endlessly fascinating hubs of life, or you can pay a visit to the Maritime Museum to discover the town's seafaring past.
