In the very heart of the Finistère department of Brittany, in France's beautiful north-west, lies the little village of Collorec. Of all the departments of Brittany, Finistère is generally accepted to be the most "Breton", with a powerful sense of identity, a strong adherence to the original Breton language (though almost everyone speaks French as well, with some even speaking English!) and a culture that is deeply ingrained in tradition and folklore.
Central Finistère, is an idyllic spot, with small villages such as Collorec lying in unspoilt rural surroundings, a perfect antidote to the stresses of life in present day Britain. (The area though, does have its larger towns and a modern lifestyle in places too.) Finistère is also a land of mystery, of standing stones and legends, of sea shanties, folk tales and a fiercely proud people. A home or a holiday in Collorec gives you the opportunity to find a truly authentic Breton life amid stunning natural beauty.
Collorec is a tranquil place, by and large, with typically Breton architecture and colours that are soothing and pleasing to the eye. Most of the houses are either exposed stone or whitewashed, topped by slate grey roofs in the traditional, sloping style. There are a couple of pretty chapels, both of which hold the very Breton "Pardon" ceremonies, and also a number of stone crosses dating back to the Middle Ages.
Collorec is set near a good fishing river (permits obtainable from the tabac) and surrounded by lovely woodland and pasture land, perfect for relaxing country walks. The larger village of Huelgoat is nearby for supermarkets, shopping, a choice of restaurants and other activities, but within Collorec itself you can find some useful amenities. There is a good general shop, tabac, bakery and a post office, with a bar and even a restaurant for your enjoyment.
From a base in the heart of the department, all of Finistère is open to you to discover. Huelgoat, besides being a useful shopping town, is a site of great historic interest, which also has mysterious rock formations and grottoes to explore and marvel at. The coast is just over half an hour's drive away, so days spent on the lovely beaches or playing in the surf are always possible. Quimper, the capital of the department is definitely worth a visit, with a beautiful mediaeval old quarter, rivers and bridges as well as excellent restaurants and a delicious gastronomy.
Instead of heading towards the coast you could cross into the neighbouring department of Morbihan to find a still Breton but decidedly different atmosphere, and perhaps a calmer climate. Finistère, being known as Land's End, can experience some exhilarating winds, especially around certain coastal areas, while Morbihan is better known for its warmer sunshine.
Brest is the nearest airport with direct flights from the UK, although both Rennes and Dinard are also quite accessible. Brest is served by Flybe and Ryanair, Rennes by Flybe and Dinard by Aurigny and Ryanair. The best ferry ports to aim for would be Roscoff or St Malo, but again, any of the northern ports are within reasonable reach of the village. If driving, the nearest major road is the N164, with the village found close to the D36.
Collorec, being set in inland Finistère offers an excellent opportunity to find a real bargain on the property market. The department is the cheapest of the Brittany region, while inland properties are almost invariably less expensive than those set on the coast. Collorec offers village homes and building plots for very low prices, allowing even those with tight budgets to find their own little piece of this magical and deeply individual corner of France.
