For buying and selling property in Commana
The little village of Commana lies in the west of Brittany, in north-western France. Quiet and unspoiled, Commana is full of traditional Breton charm, and is an ideal getaway for those seeking to escape the rat race of the UK, or indeed, to escape the relentless tourism of more popular Breton towns. The department of Finistère is noted for its myths and legends, and it is this sense of the past... of an almost supernatural past... that gives Commana its special ambience.
In truth, there is not a lot in the way of shops and night-life. In fact, there is a small general shop, which can supply basic needs, and a restaurant which makes no pretensions to grandeur but is known locally for its unfussy and tasty food, served with a distinct Breton flair. Commana has the advantage of lying close to several larger towns such as Brest, Morlaix and Quimper, all of which are bursting with shops, restaurants and entertainment. So getting to shops and supermarkets is no problem, and afterwards you can return to the tranquillity of this lovely village and escape the noise and clamour.
Finistère is the Breton land of legend, and it is in this part of Brittany that many of the stunning and mysterious menhirs or megaliths (standing stones) are found. There is a megalith in Commana, and this is known as the Commana stèle. It is a cylindrical shape, about two metres in height. No one seems sure of the origins of this menhir, although it was almost undoubtedly pagan. It is interesting to note that the stone has been altered by the addition of a Christian cross on the top. Commana's other attraction is its church, which has many fascinating features.
Commana is set close to one of Brittany's best loved lakes, le lac Drennec, and this offers an opportunity to enjoy a day out that can be as active or as lazy as you want. Laze around on the sandy beaches beside the calm waters, or swim, fish, sail or play tennis on the lakeside courts. There is also a creperie for when you feel slightly peckish.
The countryside around Commana is perhaps some of the most wild and unspoiled in Brittany, and the area holds a never ceasing attraction for walkers, who can enjoy the incredible views from the hilltops and remain undisturbed by traffic and tourist crowds. There are plenty of other sports available in the region too, with the coast less than half an hour away, and tourist towns offering a diversity of entertainment. Horse-riders can enjoy hours of safe off road riding and there is a very good riding centre just near the village.
If you want to fly, it is simple to take a flight to Brest with either Ryanair or flybe, both of whom offer very reasonable rates from the UK. The nearby port of Roscoff can be easily accessed with Brittany Ferries from Plymouth. Rail travel will get you to the town of Quimper, while road travellers should find the village not too far from from the N12.
Finistère is the cheapest of the Breton departments, so seeking property here can be a pleasant experience for those who may not have a large budget. Almost unbelievably in this day and age, there is a great selection of enticing properties on the market at the current time, for under 150,000 Euros!
