The pretty market town of Plonévez du Faou is found in the centre of the Finistère department of Brittany in the delightful north-west corner of France. The countryside that surrounds the little town is utterly unspoiled and typically Breton, offering green fields and tranquil waterways, woodland and picturesque villages. Finsistère is the most reasonably priced of all the Breton departments too, so if you are bargain hunting this is a wonderful place to begin.
There are many small towns and villages in rural Finsistère which do not offer even the most basic of shops and other amenities, but Plonévez du Faou is not one of these. Although the town is tranquil and unspoiled, there are excellent amenities with local shops, a small supermarket, a boulangerie, a library, post office, hairdressers, doctors, a dentist, schools, restaurants and bars. In short, pretty much all you need for a comfortable everyday life is on your doorstep. There are larger towns nearby, of course, should you need even more facilities, but Plonévez is great for those days when you don't want to get the car out.
The department of Finsistère is the least busy and developed of the Breton region, especially inland, where even in the height of summer you can still escape the crowds and enjoy a true rural retreat. Here there are plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the countryside and the fresh air, with a variety of sports on offer in the locality, including cycling, fishing, walking, tennis and horse-riding.
There are many lovely towns and villages to discover, all within an easy drive of Plonévez du Faou. The neighbouring town of Châteauneuf du Faou on the Nantes Brest Canal is a delight, picturesque and authentic in every way, while the wonderful mediaeval town of Quimper is a must see.
The coast is accessed in not much more than half an hour, and towns such as Douarnenez and Crozon are lively holiday bases in summer as well as being charming and traditional. The Finistère coast is spectacular, often wild and rugged with dramatic cliffs and excellent beaches
If you want to travel by air to Plonévez du Faou you can fly to Dinard (Aurigny or Ryanair) or Brest (Aer Arann, Flybe and Ryanair) direct from the UK. Should you prefer the ferry, the ports of Roscoff and St Malo are served by the excellent Brittany Ferries, while the other northern ferry ports are all within a straightforward drive of Plonévez du Faou. If you are driving you will find the town on the D36, close to the N164.
If you are seeking a property in Brittany but the budget is tight, then Finistère, particularly inland areas of the department such as Plonévez du Faou, is the best place to look. Property can still be found here at very reasonable prices, despite the deserved popularity of the region as a whole.
