Saint Hernin - a tranquil hamlet

The tiny hamlet of Saint Hernin is a perfect bolthole from the stresses and strains of modern life in the UK. It lies in an utterly unspoilt part of Finistère, Brittany's most westerly department, amid beautiful countryside and within an hour or less of the glorious Breton coast.

Sights and monuments

Saint Hernin has a gorgeous little church, listed for its beauty and which adds a real charm to the village. It dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and has an ossuary and a lovely stone statue of the Virgin Mary. Other sights include a 17th century chapel and the remains of two chateaux. Perhaps not qualifying as a sight or monument, but nevertheless an interesting attribute worth a mention here are the natural springs that offer the chance to paddle, soak tired feet and just to enjoy.

Shops and services available

A hamlet with less than 800 inhabitants is unlikely to possess nightclubs, casinos and supermarkets, and this is certainly the case with Saint Hernin. If that is what you are looking for, head for the coastal resorts and large towns, where you will find them in abundance. What Saint Hernin does have, however, unusually for a village of its diminutive size and rural location, is a boulangerie, essential for the delights of fresh baguettes and croissants each morning, a post office, a friendly bar and tennis courts. There are plenty of towns and villages within easy reach of Saint Hernin where you can access more shops and services, with Spezet being very close at hand and offering very good facilities.

Enjoy the local markets

Getting out and about, you might wish to attend some of the local markets to soak up some of the area's colour and character in addition to buying supplies of fresh produce and Breton specialities. Gourin, just four miles from the hamlet, has a market every Monday. The town of Carhaix is just a little further, and here you will find a great swimming pool complete with jacuzzi and water slides. Carhaix also has a good Saturday market, plenty of restaurants and other entertainment for young and old.

Explore the coast

The nearest beaches are found just over half an hour from Saint Hernin, so days out at the seaside are very much on the agenda. Inland, around Saint Hernin, there are possibilities for enjoying activities such as tennis, horse-riding, fishing, cycling and walking.

How to get there

There are several airports within reasonable driving distance of Saint Hernin, and these include Brest, Dinard, Rennes and Nantes. Property prices and availability in and around Saint Hernin

Inland Finistère is generally regarded as one of the best places to look for cheap property in Brittany. Much of the region has become quite pricey due to its enduring popularity, but places such as Saint Hernin offer the opportunity to access the attractions of the more expensive places without having to spend a fortune on your own property, while enjoying delightful surroundings and a tranquil lifestyle.
