For buying and selling property in Scrignac
The village of Scrignac is found in north-west France, in the Breton department of Finistère. Although it lies inland, the coast is easily accessible, and properties in and near Scrignac represent exceptional value for money. Scrignac is surrounded by beautiful and fascinating landscapes, with the incredible rock formations of Huelgoat on the doorstep. It is also a peaceful and pretty village which has already attracted a number of British full-time residents.
With only 833 residents, Scrignac cannot be said to be a large and bustling town, but the village does have good basic amenities, and you can access many of life's daily necessities without having to get into your car and head for a town. The village offers a "boulangerie" (bakery), an "epicerie" (general grocer), a pharmacy, post office, "tabac presse" (newsagents and tobacconist) and even a bar restaurant. Should you need more, there are further shops, supermarkets and markets in the nearby towns of Huelgoat and Guerlesquin, while the busier port town of Morlaix is also within reach.
Parents of young children who plan to live here permanently will be pleased to find an excellent little village school, whilst older children can attend a college in a neighbouring town. A bus picks the older children up daily, ensuring that even if they start their day at 8am, as is normal in France, you won't have to be in the car making the school run at that unearthly hour!
The village has a strong sense of community, and there are a number of associations and clubs that you can join if you want to play an active part in village life. Sports clubs are popular too, with everyone welcome and children in particular being encouraged to take part. The wider area offers many sporting and leisure activities, and you won't have to travel far to find horse-riding stables, fishing lakes and rivers, wonderful walking and cycling trails, tennis courts and golf courses.
A near neighbour of Scrignac is the town of Huelgoat, known for its amazing rock formations, grottoes and mysterious forests. The rock formations include the Trembling Stone, a 137-tonne rock that pivots in such a way as to be able to be rocked by one person! Then there is the Devil's Grotto, King Arthur's Cave, the Pool of the Fairies and the Pool of the Wild Boar... amongst other equally exciting and mysterious places to see and legends to discover. You can even take special tours of the area around Huelgoat in the company of a storyteller who is well versed in the myths and legends that enrich this lovely part of Finistère.
Whilst on the subject of days out, don't forget that the fabulous Finistère coast is only a short distance away, and the resort towns here offer many activities and entertainment.
If you want to fly, it is simple to take a flight to Brest with either Ryanair or flybe, both of whom offer very reasonable rates from then UK. Lorient is also within reach, and is served by Aer Arann. Brittany Ferries have a sea crossing to the port of Roscoff from Plymouth. Rail travel will get you to nearby Quimper. If you are travelling by road you will find the village on the D42, in between the N12 and N164.
If you want to live or own a holiday home in Brittany and money is tight, you cannot look past a village such as Scrignac. Currently on the market are some amazingly low priced properties, some of which may require a little renovation or updating but all of which offer a base in Brittany and outstanding value for money.
