Plouray, which is found in central Brittany in the coveted Morbihan department, is a village full of traditional Breton charm. Among its attractions, in addition to its pretty houses and tranquil streets, are a lake and a Buddhist Centre. The village lies in lovely countryside, close to many well known towns and sights, and is an ideal base for discovering more of this popular region.
Plouray has a very comfortable range of local shops and services, meaning that you can find most of the things you need for everyday life without having to take the car and drive for miles. In addition to the shops (boulangerie, pharmacy, general store and a bar/tabac) there is a nursery, as well as infant and junior schools, a doctor's surgery, a bank and a lovely old church. The nearby town of Rostrenen offers much larger facilities, should you need to visit the supermarket or have older children who would attend a college (secondary school).
On the edge of the village is a beautiful lake, while another, more unusual landmark is Plouray's Tibetan Buddhist Centre, a place of pilgrimage for many spiritually minded people, or simply a stunning sight.
Nearby Rostrenen is a lovely old market town, unspoiled yet offering all modern amenities. The historic town of Pontivy is well worth discovering too, as is Carnac where you can find the mysterious and ancient standing stones and megaliths. Also within reach of Plouray is the Nantes Brest Canal, perfect for a stroll along the canal banks or even a relaxing boat trip, while the coast is also within an easy drive. Seaside resorts worth adding to any itinerary of the area include Quiberon which is on the peninsula. It is utterly charming and renowned for its delicious seafood.
The region of Brittany is always a wonderful spot for getting out and about in the great outdoors, and there are numerous activities to enjoy near to Plouray. You can walk, of course, or take to your bicycle and see the area by pedal power in time honoured fashion, or visit one of the good local equestrian centres and try some sightseeing from horseback. Down at the coast there are various sea sports to try.
Flying to this area of Brittany gives you the choice of arriving at Dinard or Brest. Dinard is served by Ryanair and Aurigny, while Flybe flies to Brest. Ferry ports nearby include St Malo and Roscoff, although if you prefer to travel to the ports of Normandy or the Pas de Calais, this is also possible and not too far away. Drivers will find Plouray on the D1, close to the N164, which is a non toll motorway.
Morbihan as a rule, is a little more expensive than the other Breton departments, thanks perhaps to its sunnier climate, but there is still plenty of very reasonably priced property around if you look carefully. The department is popular with holidaymakers, so if you are looking for a place to let as a gîte when you are not using it, or as an investment, Plouray could be a good place to begin your search.
