Rochefort en Terre is a lovely little village that lies in the north-west of France, in the Morbihan department of Brittany. Its charm has led it to be given several official tourist labels: "A most beautiful village of France", "Village in bloom" and "A little city of character". And Rochefort en Terre satisfies every expectation of a village that holds these accolades. Its cobbled streets, picturesque stone houses, floral displays and historic buildings give a delightful ambience. The unspoilt countryside that surrounds it makes a perfect backdrop.
As you'd expect of a village marked out as a place of character, Rochefort en Terre has a good deal of heritage to offer. There's the 12th century castle (open to the public) whose one time owner, Alfred Klotz, began the tradition of decorating the village's houses with displays of geraniums. Then there are the old ramparts, the collegiate church, Renaissance and 16th century houses, plus beautiful gardens and floral displays.
Many small villages in France have few amenities. But Rochefort en Terre is not one of them. Thanks to its beauty and popularity, this little rural village has a wealth of shops, many showcasing local crafts. There are several restaurants to try too. On the edge of the village there's a great leisure lake. Here you can enjoy swimming, sunbathing on a lakeside beach, or taking a pedalo out onto the water. Around the lake there's a BMX course, tennis courts and a picnic area.
In addition to the leisure lake and its facilities, Rochefort en Terre offers easy access to various activities. Nearby you can find great walking, cycling and horse-riding trails. There's golf too, with a nine-hole course at Caden, just fifteen minutes away.

I enjoyed your write up of Rochefort en Terre, it is indeed a beautiful town. It has just won the most beautiful village in France, so it is even more sought after now. One thing I didn't see above, is a mention of the amazing lights at Christmas. People come from everywhere just to see them, even causing considerably long traffic jams. It's a wonderful evening, with mulled wine available in many of the bars.
