Culan - a château village

The village isn't big, but it's got several handy shops and services. There's a small supermarket, two bakers, a couple of butchers and a florist. Several small industries also thrive in Culan. When it comes to the lighter side of life, Culan has plenty to offer. There are a couple of restaurants, lovely country walks, a river for fishing and many other activities nearby.

Château de Culan - a mediaeval marvel

Culan is best known, of course, for its wonderful castle. One of the oldest occupied castles in the world, this mediaeval marvel dominates the village in a quite delightful way. The fairytale towers that characterise the building provide a great example of French military architecture, and the castle has been a listed historical monument since 1926. It's open to visitors daily throughout July and August.

More heritage to explore

The village also has other hints of its past life to discover. There's the 17th century Church of St Vincent, an old watermill and a 19th century viaduct.

Outdoor activities to enjoy

The outdoor life on offer around Culan is very appealing. There are activities available nearby that will entertain all ages and tastes, with tree climbing adventure parks, tennis, golf, fishing, walking, cycling and horse-riding. The nearby lake of Sidiaille makes a brilliant family day out when the sun's shining. Here you can swim, fish, sunbathe and simply soak up the atmosphere.

Places to visit in the vicinity include the wine producing town of Châteaumeillant, where not only can you see the extensive vineyards and taste the delicious wines, but also view various heritage sites and buildings. There's a super street market on Friday mornings too.

The area is particularly rich in castles, many of which can be visited, plus beautiful forests, rivers and lakes. It's a relatively undiscovered region when if comes to tourism, so expect to be able to enjoy your holiday unbothered by the tourist hordes.

How to get there

There's a bit of a distance to travel from Limoges airport, but the journey offers a chance to take in the stunning towns and countryside along the way. Clermont Ferrand airport is another option, currently offering summer flights only. The nearest railway station is situated at Châteauroux, 57 km away from Culan. You will need a car to get the best from your holiday in Culan, and drivers can find the village on the D943.
