The town of St Amand Montrond is located in the very heart of France, in the Cher department of the Centre Val de Loire region. Surrounded by marsh land, pasture land and arable land, the town is historically important even though its castle and original fortifications were destroyed in a siege in the 17th century. The site of the town is said to date back to prehistoric times.

The City of Gold

The town is also famous for its gold industry and for its jewellery trade. The centre piece to the town and its pride and joy, is a cultural and business centre called the City of Gold, and in this pyramid-shaped edifice you can access all manner of facilities including a convention hall, an auditorium for theatre and other forms of entertainment, a museum tracing the history of the gold industry, and a tourist centre too...no wonder the townsfolk are proud of their golden city!

St Amand Montrond is a lively town with a vivid social, cultural and sporting life. There are numerous sporting facilities and clubs to join, and children are encouraged to make the most of this access to a healthy lifestyle. The town has also been on the itinerary for the Tour de France cycle race. In 2006 St Amand was given the honour of being named the most sporting town in its region. There are various street festivals celebrating different branches of the arts, including street theatre and folk music.

How to get there

If you like to take an aeroplane to reach your destinations, the best airports to head for are probably those of Tours and Limoges, although it is also feasible to fly to Paris or Poitiers. Tours is served by Ryanair; Limoges by Ryanair and flybe; Poitiers by Ryanair; and Paris by most airlines including British Airways, Air France, bmi, bmibaby, flybe, easyJet, Jet2, Thomsonfly and Aer Lingus. The train is another possibility as there is a SNCF station at St Amand Montrond that has direct links with Paris, so rail travel is a good choice. If you like to bring your own car and travel across the channel on the ferry or the Eurotunnel, it will take you about six or seven hours to reach St Amand Montrond.

Access: By air: Fly to Tours or Limoges. By rail: There is a SNCF station at Saint Amand Montrond. By road and boat: The town is accessed from the A20 and the A71 auto routes. The drive from northern ferry ports will take around six or seven hours.


Economy: The economy is strongly concerned with the industries of gold smithery, of jewellery making and printing. Agriculture also figures.


Interesting fact: There was a settlement on the site of the town in prehistoric times, making this, perhaps, one of France's oldest towns.
