Bélâbre, whose name means "Beautiful Trees", is a delightfully pretty riverside village which lies within the Parc Naturel Regional du la Brenne in central France. It is surrounded by lovely, unspoilt countryside, packed with interesting flora and fauna while offering the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in peace. And although small, Bélâbre is well equipped with shops and services and makes an excellent base for exploring the region and the neighbouring regions of Poitou-Charentes, Limoges and Auvergne.
Bélâbre is just a perfect size. It is still small enough to be a real village, rural and tranquil in feel, yet large enough to offer all the facilities and amenities that help to make life or holidays, easy and enjoyable. Local shops include a baker's, butcher's, pharmacy, post office and a small supermarket supplying all everyday needs. There is also a bank, a doctor, a dentist and a highly regarded restaurant for those times when you fancy a treat but don't want to stray far from home. Prices are very reasonable too, with lunchtime menus from around 12 Euros at the time of writing.
The Friday morning market is another pleasure to discover in Bélâbre. A French market is always a colourful and enlivening experience, and it's absolutely the best place to find delicious fresh, locally produced ingredients to inspire your cooking and delight your family and friends.
The village has all the features that make French rural villages so charming, with a pretty church, elegant, traditionally built houses and the picturesque River Anglin running through. The river offers the opportunity to enjoy pursuits such as canoeing and fishing (permits from local tabacs) and there is also a lovely leisure lake where you can enjoy all the pleasures normally associated with the seaside in the very heart of inland France!
As the village is located in the heart of France, in the Indre but close to the border of the Vienne department of Poitou-Charentes, getting out and about can cover not just the Indre, but the neighbouring regions too. See the lakes and historic villages of the Limousin, take a day trip to the vibrant town of Poitiers and its famous theme park of Futuroscope, or simply enjoy the many outdoor activities available on your doorstep. The Parc Naturel Regional du la Brenne is packed with lovely lakes, rivers, woods and agricultural land, and is perfect for walking, bird watching, horse-riding and cycling. Local sights include the Château Guillaume, at the nearby village of Lignac.
The central location of Bélâbre means that you have several choices when it comes to deciding how to get there from the UK. The airports of Poitiers, Limoges and Tours all offer flights with budget airlines (Ryanair and Flybe), while train travel to those major cities is another possibility. Drivers should follow the A20, the A10 or the N147, finding access to Bélâbre from the D10 or D927 roads.
Property can still be found at very reasonable prices in the Indre. Tourism is gradually increasing in the area, so letting out your property (especially in an attractive village such as Bélâbre) is always a possibility to help offset costs.
