Chaillac - an old mining town

The little market town of Chaillac, which lies in the Indre department in southern Centre Val de Loire, is a lively, if small town, which has a good weekly market and useful amenities. It was once an important centre for the mining of fluorite and barite. The mines have long been closed, however, and the 100-hectare site they once occupied is to be completely revamped and made into a lovely natural park, preserving the rural beauty of the region.

Full of traditional charm

Chaillac doesn't have a vast amount of historic monuments, but it is full of traditional charm and offers a range of things to see and do. There's a lovely village church, a full complement of local shops and services, and even a mini supermarket, very handy for those everyday essentials! It is also good to know that, as eating and drinking are two of France's most celebrated pastimes, that Chaillac has a couple of café bars and a highly recommended restaurant to add to its charms.

Enjoy the Saturday market

Market day is Saturday, and it is well worth setting the alarm and getting out of bed a little earlier than usual to catch all the hustle and bustle of a traditional French market, to make sure of snapping up the best bargains! The mining museum is another good place to visit, which provides a fascinating insight into the town's history.

Sporting and leisure activities on offer

The town is set in unspoilt countryside (with the exception, perhaps, of the old mine workings, but as they are due to be beautified then this isn't really a problem!), and one of the best of the local attractions is the lake that lies on the edge of town. Here you can swim, have fun on the waterslide, fish (permits required but easily obtained) or simply enjoy a stroll along the tracks and paths beside the water. Chaillac also has tennis courts and lovely walking trails, and you won't have to travel far to find golf, horse-riding, canoeing, caving and many more things to do in the great outdoors.

Visit the utterly gorgeous St Benoit de Sault

The Indre is an often forgotten department when it comes to UK residents booking holidays or searching for property, but to ignore it would be a crying shame, as this little area of central France has so much to offer. The nearby town of St Benoit de Sault is utterly gorgeous, and well deserves its title of "one of the most beautiful villages in France".

And don't miss Argenton sur Creuse

Another to add to the itinerary is the mediaeval town of Argenton sur Creuse. This is a riverside town which is beloved of artists, and once you have glimpsed it you will understand the urge to capture its appeal on canvas! Even if you don't paint, remember to take a camera.

How to get there

There are several airports which can bring you near the town, although as yet there are no international airports within the department. Choose to fly into Limoges, Poitiers or Tours and you will not have too far to travel. Ryanair serves all three, with Flybe also serving Limoges. The TGV takes you to Tours also, from where you can access local train services or better still, hire a car. Driving to the town is quite simple, as it lies on the D36, easily accessed from the A20 motorway.
