For buying and selling property in Orsennes
Apologies for the pun... but the village of Orsennes, which is found in the beautiful area of the Indre that is known historically as the Berry, is a charming little place, rural and unspoiled by tourism yet with a thriving community and good facilities. Orsennes is quite small, with only 838 permanent inhabitants, but it has a couple of claims to fame, and its scenic setting provides even more reasons to visit.
Orsennes is proud of the fact that the village was once visited by the legendary girl warrior and martyr, Joan of Arc, or Jeanne d'Arc as she is known in France. The townsfolk have erected a statue in commemoration of this historic figure, which can be found at the entrance to the village. Other features of Orsennes include an imposing privately owned castle, dating back to the 15th century, and a lovely church. The castle (le Château de Breuil-Yvain) is open to the public on one day every year, although the grounds are open more frequently, so if you want to see inside this fabulous building you need to check the date with the local Office de Tourisme.
Orsennes offers some useful basic shops and services, which include a post office, grocers, bakers, pharmacy, doctors, vets, hairdressers, bank and a newsagents shop. For your enjoyment there are cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as traditional street markets which are held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
It is well worth getting out and about to explore this little known region, as there is some delightful countryside to discover as well as a host of historic towns, villages and chateaux. Sportsmen are welcomed here, and you will find superb lakes for swimming, fishing and sailing in the locality. The Berry has many miles of great walking trails which are so peaceful that you may feel you have entered a bygone age, a time when the motor car with its noise and pollution simply did not exist. The chief city of the Indre, Châteauroux, is worth a visit, with its atmospheric old quarter and many colourful and cultural events.
The airports of Tours, Limoges and Poitiers are all served by budget airline Ryanair and fly direct from the UK so reaching the Indre by air is possible. Limoges is also served by flybe. The region also has TGV stops at Tours and Poitiers for those who prefer to travel by train. Drivers will find easy auto route travel from the ferry ports and the tunnel, and there are good road links to all corners of France from this central location.
Property prices in Indre are usually very reasonable, with some great bargains on the market at the time of writing. Look out for bargain priced village houses and perhaps more upmarket traditionally styled country properties. It is also possible to find interesting renovation properties and good building plots in this area.
