Couiza - lively town on the River Aude

The small market town of Couiza, set against the magnificent backdrop of the Pyrénéan Mountains and lying on the banks of the River Aude, is a lively little town that belies its small size with a big personality. It is hardly surprising, given its beautiful setting, good amenities and vibrant atmosphere, that the town has become a firm favourite with ex-pats, so there are plenty of British voices to be heard around town!

Enjoy market day on Tuesday

Couiza has a market held every Tuesday morning, and this really is the place to be to bag yourself excellent local produce and to soak up an authentically French rural atmosphere. The town also has a good complement of local shops, with a small supermarket among them for convenience, as well as a handful of cafés and bars and a couple of restaurants. The larger town of Quillan is close by, offering a further range of shops and services, while Limoux, with even more, is also within a short drive.

Popular with British ex-pats

And for those who are concerned about language difficulties when moving to France, Couiza could be the answer, as there are a good number of British ex-pat tradesmen living and working in the town.

Glorious location with access to ski resorts and beaches

Couiza's glorious location, in the foothills of the Pyrénées, offers many possibilities for enjoying the wider area. In winter, the ski resorts are easily accessed within an hour or less, while the beaches of the Med, the great historic cities of the region (Carcassonne, Montpellier, Béziers) are just a short drive away, perfect for city shopping visits, trips and sight seeing days out. Even Spain can be reached within a couple of hours!

Plethora of activities on offer

Nearby there are also vineyards and wine caves for tours and tastings, beautiful walking and cycling trails, river swimming and boating sports, adventure sports such as canyoning and white water rafting, horse-riding and much more. Followers of the Holy Grail mysteries and fans of Dan Brown and Kate Mosse's novels will be fascinated by the chance to visit the religious sites of the region, with Rennes les Château set right beside Couiza. Neighbouring Rennes les Bains is also great for a family day out, with natural hot springs and a superb swimming pool.

How to get there

Travel by air to Carcassonne, Perpignan, Béziers, Montpellier or Toulouse, or by train to the same cities. Carcassonne and Perpignan are the closest airports, with Ryanair, easyJet, Bmi Baby and Flybe currently serving one or other of the five airports. Drivers will find Couiza on the D118. The nearest auto routes are the A61 and A9.

Property prices and availability in and around Couiza

Perhaps surprisingly for such a popular little town, property prices in and around Couiza are very reasonable, with some fabulous bargains to be found. Anyone seeking a country property with land will fall in love with some of the traditional country houses to be found around the outskirts of the town. Village houses are also well represented, and prices are around the lowest in the department.
