The village of Fleury, which lies in the sunny south of France in the department of the Aude in Languedoc-Roussillon, is a charming old fortified village with many traditional features. Set amid the vineyards of France's biggest wine producing region, Fleury is also halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the dramatic Cevennes Mountains, offering a kaleidoscope of landscapes as well as a wealth of activities and points of interest.
Fleury is full of quaint charm, having narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses, their stones and shutters bleached by centuries of hot southern sun. The old chateau, that overlooks the little town from its lofty position on a hill, is sadly decaying, but it is still possible to see many original features.
Fleury is a thriving living village, and it offers all the usual shops and services as well as plenty of luxuries such as bars and restaurants. There are also numerous activities available in the village and the locality, and with many sports such as tennis, swimming, golf, horse-riding and adventure sports on offer, there is no excuse for inactivity! However, if you prefer a less taxing pursuit, perhaps you would enjoy availing yourself of the opportunity to boost your knowledge of the local wines by visiting the vineyards and tasting the excellent produce.
Take advantage of the chance to discover the history of this ancient locality, and follow the trail of the tragic Cathars, whose stories so define the region. The cities of Béziers and Carcassonne are both fascinating and beautiful as well as bursting with shops and culture. The Mediterranean Sea, with the lively resort of St Pierre de la Mer and the charming fishing village of Les Cabanes de Fleury is on the doorstep, with the rugged beauty of the Cevennes Mountains just a short way in the opposite direction. There are many lovely towns and villages to visit, and castles and historical sites everywhere.
You can fly to several airports which are close to your destination. These are Montpellier, Marseille, Nîmes and Carcassonne, and between them they are served by a good selection of airlines. Direct flights from the UK may also be starting to fly into Béziers in the near future. If you prefer to travel by train, you can also take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille, then change to a TGV which will take you all the way to Béziers, just minutes from Fleury. Drivers will find Fleury from the A9 auto route.
Fleury lies in the department of the Aude, where property prices are reasonable in comparison with much of the south of France. The prices of property in the seaside parts of the commune are likely to be a little higher than those in the inland villages, but there is a good selection of property currently on the market and it is possible to find some real bargains in the locality. Rental values here should be good and remain so, as the area is popular with holiday makers.
