For buying and selling property in La Franqui
If your experience of seaside resorts on the Med has left you feeling a little jaded, a little tired of the pretensions to sophistication and grandeur that so many seem to assume, the little resort of La Franqui, near Leucate on the southern coast of France, may be just the antidote you need.
La Franqui does not pretend to be anything she isn't... she doesn't need to. Pretty enough in her own right to attract the tourists anyway, La Franqui gives you exactly what she promises. A beautiful beach, a pretty setting, family fun and some excellent seafood! La Franqui is quiet in the off-season, but don't forget the sunshine... there is plenty of that, whatever the time of year!
La Franqui is a resort that goes right back to its roots. It oozes old fashioned charm, simple and perfect for families. The pleasures here come more from simply served but perfectly cooked fresh seafood, rather than elaborate nouvelle cuisine dishes served with a flourish and a bill as long as your arm. The restaurants in La Franqui are mainly simple and café-like, but then proof, as they say, is in the eating. There is a reason why so many people return to La Franqui for their seafood fix.
La Franqui has a lovely safe, sandy beach, and a sea the colour of blue topaz. Add a backdrop of glossy, deep green pine trees, that climb back from the headland at one end of the beach, maybe a sailing competition or two to watch, excellent ice cream and seafood, and you have a delicious recipe for a family day out. Take your bucket and spade.
La Franqui is not the big city by any means (the population mentioned in this guide includes the Leucate area), but it offers all the usual necessary shops and services. There's a post office, a pharmacy, bakers, grocers and other small shops. Just a few kilometres away you will find doctors and schools, sports facilities and supermarkets.
La Franqui is a great sporting venue, with water sports and swimming top of the agenda. The resort hosts some high profile sailing competitions, so if you time it right the entertainment can be brilliant! Close to the resort you will also be able to take part in horse-riding, golf, cycling, walking and tennis.
Using La Franqui as a base for further exploration of the area is a good idea, as there are many interesting places to see within an easy drive of the resort. Take a look at the intriguing inland seas, or salt water lagoons that are such a feature of this area, and enjoy the sight of pretty pink flamingoes, wading and fishing in the calm waters. Spend a day in the lively atmosphere of the cities of Montpellier or Narbonne, travel to nearby Carcassonne, with its fairytale cité and Cathar history, or drive along the coast to the lovely Roussillon villages and Spain. You won't run out of things to do from La Franqui.
There are plenty of airports near La Franqui which have direct flights from the UK. These include Montpellier, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Montpellier is served by easyJet and Ryanair; Carcassonne by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair and bmibaby. Rail travel is also a good option, as you can take the Eurostar from England to Paris, then change to a TGV and travel in comfort to Montpellier or Toulouse. La Franqui has a railway station which makes life even easier! Drivers will find La Franqui on the coast after leaving the A9 auto route.
Mediterranean property always comes at a price. La Franqui is not a cheap place to buy a property, but it is still very much better value than some of the better known resorts, and certainly than its Riviera neighbours. Rental values are pretty good in La Franqui, which allows you to offset some of the initial purchase costs if you choose to rent the property out for part of the year.
