Narbonne Plage - a summer paradise

The resort of Narbonne Plage, which lies some ten miles from the city of Narbonne on the French Mediterranean, is a summer paradise for families and for water sports enthusiasts. Narbonne Plage is busy to bursting in high summer, yet the huge expanses of sandy beaches never seem to be uncomfortably crowded. The population can reach 30,000 at this time, but the resort is quiet to being almost deserted in the depths of winter.

Narbonne Plage's Blue Flag beaches

The resort was awarded the Blue Flag denoting the quality and cleanliness of its beaches in 1988, and this high standard has been maintained ever since. Narbonne Plage is popular not only with holiday makers but also with local families, and many local youngsters arrive every summer to take the excellent water sports courses offered here.

The cuisine of the Mediterranean

If you are seeking a diet that will take you well into old age... Narbonne Plage is the place to be! The Mediterranean diet enjoyed here is the classic recipe for a long, healthy life. Packed with traditional goodies like olive oil, garlic, sun-ripened tomatoes and aromatic herbs, supplemented with the freshest of fish and seafood, this is the diet that the experts recommend... and it's tasty too! The resort has a good number of superb restaurants serving this type of food, and there are plenty of lively bars around, where you can work up an appetite with an aperitif or two first!

Shopping and city life

Narbonne Plage has access to plenty of shops, having a post office, a bank and supermarkets and other shops all close to hand. For a big city experience you only have to travel about ten miles to reach Narbonne itself, and this fantastic city is a definite "must see". The city is packed with tradition and culture, and with the beautiful Canal de la Robine running through its centre, it is picturesque too. Narbonne has one of the biggest and best markets in France, so take your shopping basket! Products to look out for at the market include locally produced wines, honey, olive oils (you won't believe how many varieties there are!), olives, herbs and seafood.

Out and about

For a life in the open air, Narbonne Plage is just about as good as it gets. The resort has one of the best sailing and water sports schools on the French Med, and there are facilities for children to be kept safe and happy while the parents hone their sailing skills. Children can take lessons too, with well qualified instructors to give you peace of mind.

The wildlife of the garrigue

If you travel inland from the resort you will discover the wonderful wildlife of the "garrigue", the wild and beautiful countryside that borders the manicured rows of vines in the extensive vineyards. Perfect for sports such as pony trekking and mountain biking, this unspoiled area is just waiting to be discovered.

How to get there

Reaching Narbonne Plage from the UK is remarkably inexpensive and easy, thanks to the budget airlines who serve the local airports. Ryanair flies into Carcassonne, Montpellier, Perpignan and Nîmes. Montpellier is also served by British Airways and GB Airways, Perpignan by bmibaby and flybe, while Toulouse is served by British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, flybe and bmi. Trains also run to the area, with Narbonne having a TGV station making rail travel all the way from the UK swift and straightforward.

Property prices and availability in and around Narbonne Plage

Narbonne Plage has many attractive new build properties situated in "lotissements" (similar to smart housing estates in the UK), and these make perfect "lock up and leave" holiday homes. They are ideal for families as the roads are quiet and for residents use only. Many are rendered with the traditional Provençal pink colour render, and they are attractive and reasonably priced, as well as being very close to the beach and all facilities. Being modern, there is little or no improvement to undertake, and maintenance is minimal.
