Situated North-East of Uzes, Bagnols Sur Ceze is widely considered to be the gateway to the Languedoc. The town has a population of about 18,000. It is near the border with two other regions - Provence and the Rhone Alps. Over the years the town has benefited well from this cosy relationship and has prospered from the trade running between them. There is still a lively market in the town. These days, however, the advantage of its strategic location is of more interest to tourists who use the town as a base for exploring the many notable places of interest in the three regions.
You won't have to travel very far to see the first 'place of interest', however, as the town is itself a great location for a number of activities. If you like art there is the Musee de Peinture Albert Andre, put together by one of Renoir's friends. It proudly boasts being the first such museum of contemporary art anywhere in France. It burned down with all its art inside in 1924. Firemen were on the scene immediately, because unfortunately it was they who had accidentally started the fire during their ball!
This story does have a happy ending. Andre sent a distress call out to the art community and they responded by re-filling the new museum with a whole host of works by artists such as Bonnard, Marquet, Matisse, Picasso, Signac, Gauguin and, of course, his friend Renoir. The end result was even more impressive than the original.
Bagnols Sur Ceze is a wonderful mixture of traditional French atmosphere with very modern facilities and activities. It has about 300 shops located between predominantly 13th Century houses. The Ceze valley offers great opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. If you've never tried your hand at these activities then there is no better place to start. If you want an enjoyable activity that requires a bit less effort, the area is ideal for both fishing and sunbathing as well. Golf, horse riding, tennis and swimming are among the most popular activities.
The nearest international airport is located in Nimes, which has regular Ryanair flights from the UK. Another option is to go by train. The fast and comfortable TGV train service will take you down to Nimes.
Property prices are on the increase across the whole of the Languedoc with the Gard remaining one of its most expensive departments. You are unlikely to find any 'bargain properties' near the town.
