Issirac - in a prime position

The lovely little mediaeval village of Issirac occupies a prime location on the top of the highest hill in its area, offering fantastic views over the surrounding countryside of lavender fields, cherry and almond groves, vineyards and distant mountains. It's an historic village, dating back to Gallo Roman times, and has a delightfully authentic character.

Tranquil village life

The village is essentially a very tranquil place, and you will need a car to travel to the nearby town of Pont Saint Esprit, just down the road, for your shopping. That said, the village and the farms that border it do a roaring trade in fresh local produce, and you can enjoy, straight from the producers, such delights as organic new laid eggs, sheep's and goat's cheeses and milk, nuts and fruits (cherries, almonds, olives and plums) and even buy swathes of lavender to decorate your home and create a truly Provencal ambience. Issirac does have a social life, centring on its one little café bar… its not exactly party city, but then, can you put a price on this sort of beauty and tranquillity?

Explore the Grotto de la Forestière

Issirac is tiny, with just 180 inhabitants, but its historic character is evident and there are one or two worthy sights to discover. There's a village church, which was renovated in the 19th century, votive fountains, lovely old streets and houses, and the fascinating Grotto de la Forestière, a show cave discovered in the Issirac Forest, which has excellent examples of stalactites and stalagmites, cave coral and a nearby underground river. The Grotto is open to the public every year during the summer season.

Out and about

The region offers lots of possibilities when it comes to exploring the world outside the village. The city of Nîmes deserves at least a day of your time, while the smaller but equally famous towns of Avignon and Orange are also well worth a visit. The Cevennes Mountains, with their lovely dense forests of chestnut are wonderful for walkers and nature lovers, while the marshy Camargue, famed for its black bulls, white horses and art towns is also accessible.

Sports on offer

Orange has a good golf course, so golfers can still enjoy their fix while staying in Issirac, and there are plenty of other sports and leisure activities to be found in the area too, with horse-riding stables, swimming, tennis and cycling available.

How to get there

The nearest airports are located at Avignon (50 kilometres away) and Nīmes (70 kilometres away), with the drives taking less than an hour. Alternatively you could use Montpellier or Marseille airports. Avignon is served by Flybe and Jet2; Nīmes is served by Ryanair; Montpellier by easyJet and Ryanair; and Marseille by Air France, British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and Bmi Baby. The town of Avignon, famed for its bridge, has a railway station, offering another choice for accessing the village. Finally, if driving, you will find the A7 auto route and the N86 roads bring you close to Issirac, with the smaller roads of the D901 and D980 bringing you closer still, to the edges of the village.
