Sabran - a community and one of eight hamlets

Sabran is not one town, but a community made up of the eight hamlets of Donnat, Carmes, Colombier, Combe, Megier, Cadignac, Charavel and Sabran. The commune is set against the lovely rural landscapes of the Gard department in the sun-soaked south of France. In fact, this part of the Gard is referred to as "The Gard Provençal", because it carries so many of the characteristics of Provence, although remains technically in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.

Sights and attractions

Sabran has a long history, although there are few actual monuments still standing. It is possible though, to see the remains of the castle, a Templar castle, and original mediaeval churches and chapels. The countryside around the district is not only picturesque, but also of great importance to the community, whose economy has long depended on agriculture, and more specifically, on wine. The vineyards and forests work in harmony here, with the great chestnut trees not only bringing their delicious harvest of nuts, but also providing much needed protection for the vines from the powerful Mistral and other winds that can blow through the area.

Village life

The tiny hamlets offer little in terms of shops and restaurants, but these facilities are easily found in other, larger communities nearby. There are a couple of hotel restaurants, and also some travelling shops which call each week. Essentially, though, life in Sabran is peaceful and an ideal antidote to the hectic modern lifestyle that most of us endure. It certainly isn't the place for those who seek non-stop entertainment, large shops, bright lights and nightclubs!

Out and about

The Gard Provençal is far less well known than the true Provence, yet has many delights in store which are easily accessed from a base in Sabran. The wonderful departmental capital city, Nîmes, which is packed with Roman monuments and architecture, is an essential addition to any itinerary of the Gard, as is the charming mediaeval town of Uzes.

Don't miss the Pont du Gard Bridge

The Mediterranean coast is within reach, and is always a great place for a day out, especially on those long, hot summer days that the Gard knows so well. The Gard's most prized possession, though, is the fantastic Pont du Gard Bridge, the largest Roman aqueduct in the world.

How to get there

The nearest airports are Avignon, Nîmes and Montpellier, all of which offer direct flights from the UK. If you prefer to let the train take the strain, you can travel in style from Paris to Nîmes on the excellent TGV. The nearest auto routes are the A9 and A7. The hamlet of Sabran itself can be found from the D6.

Property prices and availability in and around Sabran

The Gard, in common with much of the south of France, isn't really the cheapest place for property, but prices are still usually lower than those in Provence. However, Sabran and its environs do have some very reasonably priced properties on the market from time to time, and there are still chances to find renovation projects.
