The village of Abeilhan, which is situated in the Hérault department of Languedoc Roussillon in the south of France, is one of the fascinating and traditional "circulade" villages which are unique to this particular part of France. Seen from the air, the village centre forms a circle, the old houses and walls having been constructed thus to provide a fortification against attack. Abeilhan is a wine village, and is surrounded by the extensive vineyards that produce some of the best wines of the region.
Some of the little villages that are found in the southern French countryside have few amenities and seem to sleep their way through life, but Abeilhan has good basic amenities and a lively attitude to life, making it an attractive place to holiday or indeed, to live. The look and feel of the village is traditional, with the mellow stone houses in their distinctive circular layout calling the past ever to mind
You will have no problem finding good local shops and services here, making everyday life easy and comfortable. Abeilhan has café bars, a restaurant, schools, doctors and more. The village is set in the midst of several important wine domaines, and tastings and educational visits are available.
The two most dominant features of the area around Abeilhan are wine and sunshine, which is never a bad start! The countryside is beautiful, with well cared for vineyards reaching almost as far as the eye can see, and the Mediterranean coast is within easy reach for days out. If you are interested in the fascinating history of the region, visits to the great Cathar cities of Béziers and Carcassonne are recommended, while sports fans will find themselves in paradise, with access to adventure sports such as rock climbing and white water rafting, swimming, sailing and mountain biking.
The nearest airport is situated at Béziers, which offers direct flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair. Other airports which could be used to access the region include Carcassonne and Montpellier, while the train can take you to any of the foregoing cities, as well as Narbonne. The A9 auto route is the one to follow to access the area, with the village located close to the D15.
Property in the Hérault can still be found at reasonable prices, although as the department's popularity has grown and the word has spread about its many charms, prices have increased. Villages such as Abeilhan offer chances to find traditional houses in charming surroundings. They can also be a good place to set up tourist orientated properties, such as gîtes or chambres d'hôtes.
