For buying and selling property in Boujan sur Libron
It is impossible to overestimate the importance of wine in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon, in the centre south of France. Many of the area's villages grew up solely around the business of wine production, and Boujan sur Libron is just one such village. It is also an historic circulade, a village constructed in a defensive circle shape, unique to this region of France. The village is full of original character and architecture, with many of the old wine properties still existing, and operating today.
Boujan, with its appealing, circular form is a pleasing tangle of old streets and mellow, curving houses. It has a good range of useful shops and services, with all amenities such as schools, doctors and banks on hand. Larger and more extensive facilities and services can easily be accessed in nearby Béziers, just some five minutes up the road.
Life in Boujan sur Libron is a pretty tranquil affair, concerned primarily with the vineyards that surround the village, and the process of turning the ripe grapes into wonderfully drinkable wines. In its historic centre you can see various different aspects of the wine trade taking place. There are direct sales outlets from the individual wine estates, wine caves selling local wines (and offering good advice if you ask!) and bars, cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy the fruits of the local vineyards alongside a delicious meal.
One thing Boujan sur Libron is passionate about, apart from wine, that is, are fêtes. These generally take the form of big, outdoor parties, informal and friendly, beginning with a communal meal and finishing with music and dancing. Definitely worth catching if you can, as they offer a real experience of local colour as well as unlimited jugs of local wine!
The Hérault and surrounding departments are a rich source of interesting places to go and things to do. Béziers, the department's capital city, has a history rooted in the tragic Cathars, as is nearby Carcassonne. Both cities are great destinations for days out, offering plenty to keep you busy from sun up to sun down, when you will doubtless want to return to Boujan sur Libron for that essential glass of wine and relaxation.
Boujan sur Libron is an inland village, but only just, and the Mediterranean Sea and its fascinating inland lagoons, known as etangs, are almost on the doorstep. The seafood here has to be tried to be believed, and the towns and villages that line the etangs are bursting with Mediterranean character. The lovely countryside of the Hérault meanwhile lends itself to a great number of outdoor pursuits, and here, close to Boujan, you can find golf, horse-riding, cycling, walking, canyoning, rafting and many more sports and leisure activities.
The little airport at Béziers which is on the doorstep, offers direct flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair, as does that of Carcassonne. Montpellier and Perpignan are also close enough to consider. Train travel is another possibility, as Béziers has a station which has TGV links. If you want to drive to the village, and it is advisable to have a car in order to make the most of the area, take the A9 auto route. Boujan is found close to the N9.
Boujan sur Libron is in a desirable part of France, and thus property is not particularly cheap, but that said, it is still by quite a distance cheaper than that in nearby Provence. Old village houses can be found quite reasonably priced, while there are some luxury developments springing up on the old wine estates.
