Causses et Veyran is a wine producing village that lies amid the vineyards of the Hérault department in Languedoc-Roussillon in the south of France. The village is typical of this region of France, with its old stone houses, colourful shutters and red, terracotta rooftops, softened by centuries of hot summer sunshine. The surrounding countryside tells the story of the village, and indeed, of the region. Everywhere you look, you will see hectare upon hectare of vineyards, the origin of the excellent wines that bear the Saint Chinian label.
Causses et Veyran is tranquil and unpretentious, yet fulfils all your expectations of a southern French rural village. Totally authentic, many of its houses have stood for centuries, and there is a gentle air of confidence about the place. Causses et Veyran knows exactly what it is (and is proud to be); a wine producing village in one of the Languedoc's best wine regions.
The village is calm, but far from dead. There's the essential bread shop, open daily, and for other needs various travelling shops arrive at designated times to sell meat, cheese and fresh fruit and vegetables. The pizza van turns up every Friday evening, and manages to produce some of the best pizzas you will ever taste! There aren't any restaurants in the village at the time of writing, but there are many excellent places in the countryside and neighbouring towns where you can enjoy the exquisite cuisine of the region.
The larger town of Murviel lès Béziers is near at hand for more conventional shopping with supermarkets and other services, and for big city days you can easily reach Béziers, Montpellier or Carcassonne.
For a relatively small village, there are nevertheless a few historical sights to enjoy. The parish church dates from the 10th century, while you can also discover an 11th century priory, and even Roman towers standing slightly bizarrely in the centre of a vineyard!
This historic region of France offers so many choices for days out and activities that you will need far longer than a two-week holiday to enjoy it all. The River Orb, just five minutes from the village, provides the chance to cool off with a swim, while the Mediterranean Sea is only a short drive away. The vineyards and wine domains often offer tours and tastings, while the towns and villages of the area host a variety of fêtes and markets, all adding to local colour while offering a great chance to taste and buy the best of local produce.
For history and culture, you can hardly find a more interesting region of France. The Cathar cities of Béziers and Carcassonne are close by, and the rugged Languedoc countryside is dotted with ancient castles, monasteries and chateaux.
There are several airports within reach of Causses et Veyran which have direct flights to and from the UK. These include Béziers, Montpellier, Carcassonne, Perpignan and Nîmes, with Béziers being the closest. Airlines flying to these airports include Ryanair, easyJet, Flybe and Bmibaby. These cities also have train stations, allowing you to make the journey by train. If you are driving, which is recommended as many of the places of interest are difficult to access without a car, you can find the village from the D14 or D909, not far from the A9 auto route.
The Hérault is a popular department, and property in some areas can be quite pricey. However, keeping inland and away from the major towns can be rewarding as you find prices becoming far more reasonable.
