For buying and selling property in Corneilhan
The village of Corneilhan sits on a hill in the Hérault department of southern France, just half an hour from the beaches of the Mediterranean. From its elevated position Corneilhan gazes out over the vast acres of vineyards that are such a feature of this area, to the hills of the High Languedoc beyond, and contemplates its long history under a seemingly ever present sun.
Corneilhan was once an important defensive point for the city of Béziers, and there are still some traces of its ancient fortifications visible. Other signs of the history of Corneilhan can be found in the fountain that bears the pilgrim symbol of a scallop shell (showing that it was once an important place on the route to Santiago de Compostela), the remains of a pilgrim hospital, and the village church which occupies, as always, the highest point in the village.
Corneilhan has a warm and lively atmosphere, and welcomes both new residents and visitors with open arms. At only six or seven kilometres from Béziers where you will find all the facilities of a modern city, Corneilhan nevertheless provides most of the necessary basic shops and services, including the charmingly French village staples of a boulangerie, a boucherie and an epicerie. You may also be pleasantly surprised to find that this little village has a bar-restaurant for socialising, relaxing and treating yourself to the excellent food and wine of the region.
The Languedoc is one of France's most fascinating regions with its history of religious wars, Cathar martyrs and mysterious Templar Knights. Certainly you can follow the Da Vinci Code trail here, visit the Sauniere Chapel at Rennes les Châteaux, see the beautiful mediaeval walled cité of Carcassonne and explore the ruins of hundreds of castles and fortifications. If it isn't the history of the region that attracts you, then consider its natural beauty, its ever sunny skies and the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Sporting enthusiasts will find an endless variety of activities in the region, with swimming in lakes and rivers as well as at the coast, fishing, golf, pony trekking, walking, climbing and so much more.
Reaching the region is easy, and possibly about to become easier still, as the local town of Béziers is rumoured to be about to offer flights to and from the UK with Ryanair. The existing airports of Carcassonne, Montpellier and Perpignan all provide direct flights from the UK, most with budget airlines, including Ryanair, easyJet, bmibaby and flybe. There is a train station at Béziers which links to a TGV, so you can travel all the way from England by rail with just a couple of simple changes. If travelling by road you should follow the A9 auto route.
The Hérault is popular with foreign buyers, particularly the British and the Dutch, and this has driven house prices up. There are still some properties available at reasonable prices, however, with small village houses on the market for under a hundred thousand Euros, making the dream of life in the sun affordable for all. The upper end of the market is also well represented in and around Corneilhan, with beautiful character properties that were once the homes of the wealthy winegrowers.
