Espondeilhan - set in stunning countryside

The little village of Espondeilhan lies in the centre south of France, in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon. The countryside around the village offers acres of some of France's most prolific wine producing vineyards, rolling hills, distant mountains and, not far away, the warm, blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Best sunshine records in the country

Many of the towns and villages of this region are steeped in history, and those with the will to discover this can find endless opportunities to explore ancient chateaux, follow the trail of the mysterious Cathars and the Knights Templar and visit fascinating mediaeval cities such as Béziers and the beautiful Carcassonne. The region is known for its climate, having one of the best sunshine records in the country.

A peaceful village life

Espondeilhan is small and peaceful, with a population of just 831 permanent inhabitants. There are, however, a handful of shops, cafés and a pizza takeaway, although for most of your shopping you will need to take the car to the nearby villages of Magalas or Roujan, where you can find more amenities including supermarkets, artisanal shops and restaurants.

Relax in this tranquil spot

Espondeilhan is a place to relax, glass of local wine in hand at the end of a day exploring the area, a tranquil getaway where the sun shines most of the time and the unpolluted night sky offers a perfect canopy of stars to dream under. The village does have a particularly lovely church, the Eglise Notre Dame des Pins, which is a fortified structure dating to the 11th century.

Out and about

The Hérault, and indeed, all of the surrounding departments offer endless opportunities to get out and about, enjoy new activities and visit ancient sites. For those who enjoy being active there are more than enough sporting challenges to be found in the locality, with white water rafting, canyoning, canoeing, kayaking and rock climbing in the inland gorges and mountains, while at the sea you can swim, scuba dive, snorkel, sail, water ski and more. The less adventurous will be able to enjoy walking, cycling along the flat towpaths of the lovely Canal du Midi, or playing golf with a choice of good courses easily accessed from a base in Espondeilhan.

Learn about the fascinating history of the area

The Languedoc is steeped in history, and it is, perhaps, one of the most historically fascinating regions of the entire country. It was here, in mediaeval times, that the Catholic crusades against the Cathars took place, and many of the cities and chateaux bear witness to the terrible tragedies and battles that took place as the established church tried to quell what they saw as the heretical threat of the Cathars.

Explore the surrounding towns, ruined castles and small villages

The cities of Béziers and Carcassonne have their stories to tell, and are both interesting and a pleasure to explore, while all around the countryside you will see ruins of great castles, standing on top of the hills and rocky mountainous crags. Many of the small villages close to Espondeilhan have interesting historical features, and are also frequently home to colourful street markets, festivals and other cultural events.

How to get there
