The village itself is a piece of Languedoc heritage. Its circular shape is found in various areas of the region. Villages like this were so designed to protect their most important buildings and families, which were found in the centre of the circles. Fouzilhon also has plenty of heritage to discover nearby, with towns like Pezenas and Béziers near neighbours. Then there is the wine tradition of the region to explore and enjoy!

Life in the village

Life in Fouzilhon seems not to have changed much for several hundred years in many ways! The stress and hurry of modern life is left behind when you enter the village. But, you can still find access to necessities, as mobile bread shops and butchers' shops visit regularly. Other than that, it's all very slow paced, befitting an ancient Mediterranean village that lies in one of the sunniest and warmest parts of France.

The village may be tiny and quiet, but when it comes to finding things to do you'll be spoilt for choice. The region offers everything from adventure sports like white water rafting and rock climbing, to pony trekking, walking and golf. Then it's but a short drive to the coast, where there are sea sports and lots of entertainment to be found in the Mediterranean resorts.

Anything is possible! From a base in Fouzilhon you can take the Cathar trail, if it's history and heritage that appeals. Follow the ancient steps of the tragic Cathars, and visit towns like Carcassonne or unravel the age old mysteries of Rennes le Château. Bathe in the hot springs of Rennes les Bains, or pop down to the coast to marvel at the beautiful wildlife of the Étangs and to dine on fantastic seafood there. And, don't miss Pezenas, with its stunning architecture.

How to get to Fouzilhon

You have lots of choice when it comes to getting to Fouzilhon. The closest airport is Béziers, but you can also fly to Carcassonne, Montpellier or Perpignan. Or you can travel by rail to the same cities. Drivers can find Fouzilhon on the D174 near to the A75 motorway.

Property prices and availability in and around Fouzilhon

The south of France is expected to be expensive, when it comes to property. But, prices in 2012, in and near to Fouzilhon offer good value for money and varied properties. Currently (July 2012) prices start at just under 80,000 Euros, for a three bedroom home that needs work.

Interesting fact: Fouzilhon is a circulade village. These are typical of the Languedoc, and were built in a circular pattern as a defensive strategy.
