Nizas - historic circular village

The pretty wine village of Nizas, which is situated amongst the vineyards of the Hérault department, which so characterise the area, is an historic "circulade" village, typical of and unique to, this part of France. Nizas is full of authentic charm, its mellow stone houses with curving walls forming a defensive circle around its historic centre and defensive tower, attractive to tourists but never overrun or spoiled by tourism.

Good location, close to beaches and coastal resorts

The village is close to many of the attractions of the beautiful, Mediterranean area, with easy access to the beaches and resorts of the coast, surrounded by history and legend, and adhering still to the distinctive and delightful culture of the central south of France.

Life in the village

Nizas is a small, peaceful village, yet there is a fierce pride among its inhabitants, which number several ex-pat families as well as those born and bred in the village. The appeal of Nizas lies in its blend of history, tranquillity, its beauty and its culture of rural life and the production of wine, although it must be said, the fantastic sunshine record that it enjoys is another factor that should be taken into account!

Strong community spirit and good basic facilities

Small it may be, but Nizas is a friendly village with a strong community spirit. Facilities within the village, perhaps unusually for such a small, rural place, include a general shop, a bar and a post office, catering for basic needs. Pezenas is a nearby town which has shops, supermarkets, restaurants as well as historical sights and monuments, and the cities of Béziers and Montpellier are also within reach.

Explore Nizas's historic quarter

The historic quarter of Nizas, known as Le Quartier de la Villette, includes the Castrum Tower, the village square complete with fountain and a castle, although the latter is not open to the public at the time of writing.

Out and about

One of the great things about Nizas is that there is so much of interest within easy reach, with historic towns and cities to visit nearby, as well as many other activities on offer. You may want to spend sun-soaked days at the seaside swimming in the Med, enjoying the lively ambience of the resorts set along this stretch of coast, or you may prefer to explore the vineyards and wine domains and learn about the process by which the grapes are turned into wines. Or perhaps the more active amongst you would like to take part in exciting outdoor sports such as rock climbing, canyoning and white water rafting?

How to get there

There are several airports within reach of Nizas which offer direct flights to and from the UK. These include Béziers, Montpellier, Carcassonne and Nîmes, with Béziers being the closest. All are served by Ryanair, with Montpellier also being served by easyJet. These cities also have train stations, allowing you to make the journey by train if that is your preferred form of transport. If you are driving, which is recommended as many of the places of interest are difficult to access without a car, you will find the village close to the A75 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Nizas

The Hérault is a popular place for property seekers, and prices can be on the high side, especially on the coast. Inland, however, in villages such as Nizas, property can often be found much more reasonably, with lovely, character properties on the market for between 200,000 and 300,000 Euros.
