Roujan - where wine rules

If you don't like wine or vineyards, then the pretty village of Roujan, situated in the south of France, is not the place for you. If, however, your idea of heaven is to sit in the shade of an umbrella or palm tree while sipping a glass of superb local wine whilst the vineyards bustle with activity all around... then make haste to Roujan! You may just have found the perfect place to live. This small and attractive old village lies in the Hérault department of southern France, close to Béziers and Montpellier, and only a twenty-minute drive to the Mediterranean coast.

Stone arches over tiny streets

The town itself is as old as the hills that lie nearby (the Haute National Park de Languedoc is close to the village), and there is a real sense of past times as you walk the narrow cobbled streets with their ancient stone arches overhead. The houses are resplendent in traditional shades of sand, cream and terracotta, and the main street offers a pleasant selection of bars, cafés, restaurants and shops.

Things to do in and close to Roujan

Roujan is only small, but its superb location means that there is a greater than average variety of things to do and enjoy. It takes less than half an hour to reach the coast, and here there is also the unique environment of the Bassin de Thau to experience too, with its amazing wildlife and vegetation. The Mediterranean beaches offer many water sports and beach activities, and the coastal towns are well equipped with leisure facilities. Inland, there is a lovely leisure lake where you can swim, fish, or simply soak up the southern sun and enjoy the tranquillity. Also available locally are horse-riding, cycle hire, tennis, boules and many other sports.

Wine tastings

For the less sporty minded, there is always the wine. (Did I mention the wine?) There are numerous wine producers close to Roujan who are happy to arrange tastings and direct sales, so wine buffs should be well catered for!

How to get there

The airport of Béziers is the closest to Roujan, but it is also easy to reach from Montpellier, Carcassonne, Nîmes or Perpignan. Béziers is served by Ryanair; Montpellier by GB Airways, Ryanair and British Airways; Carcassonne by Ryanair; Nîmes by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair; bmibaby and flybe. The train is another possibility as there is a TGV stop at Montpellier, so you can make almost the entire journey by rail with ease and in comfort! Alternatively, if you fancy driving (it can be fascinating to see the changing regions of France as you travel south), it will take you around twelve hours from Calais, allowing for coffee breaks.

Property prices and availability in and around Roujan

Roujan is situated in a popular department, but prices are still significantly cheaper than in neighbouring Provence. The village has found considerable popularity with British ex-pats, who find its architecture, weather and general ambience very appealing.
