Vias lies in the centre south of France, not far from the brash and beautiful Cap d'Agde on the Mediterranean coast. As seems to be the way with these Mediterranean French towns, Vias has not just one identity, but two. It has both an old and interesting part of town where history and tradition rule, and a modern beach resort where the population can dance until dawn. And between the two of them, they have all the restaurants, shops, amenities and services you are likely to need.
Vias's history dates back not just to the well documented Roman occupation, of which traces can still be seen in the town today, but also much further back to 2,000 BC. Cave drawings found in the region have led to the belief that there was a settlement here at this time. It is also believed that Greek sailors came ashore to Vias in around 600 BC.
Vias was built from the local black volcanic stone, giving it a unique appearance, and was subjected to various influences throughout its history and development. One of the more interesting of these was the Italian design of the doors. A covered market building was also constructed. The development of the wine industry as a major economic force in the region had its effect on the architecture of Vias too, with many of the houses being built with wine caves or wine cellars on the ground floor, so providing easy access to the street.
Vias is set on the Canal du Midi, and this is a landmark you would not want to miss. Whether you are cruising down its peaceful lengths on a boat, or simply walking alongside in the shade of the trees that line the canal, you can enjoy the tranquillity and admire the amazing feat of engineering that created this beautiful waterway.
You can see Vias best, perhaps, by following the Heritage trail, which will take you about half an hour to complete and which takes in all the most interesting features of the town, such as the 15th century listed church and the pyramid-shaped and gargoyle-encrusted bell tower.
The beach side area of Vias is known as Vias Plage. Here you can find all the fun of the seaside, with sports and leisure activities for everyone as well as the chance to laze around and enjoy some of the best sunshine in France. Here too you will find shops and restaurants, including a great Tapas Bar providing the type of food that just screams Mediterranean!
Vias lies in an area of France where the sun shines for most of the year, so it is a great place for enjoying outdoor sports and activities. The town has a sports programme every summer, where the sports instructors of the town run sessions of various sports including volleyball, badminton and table tennis. There are also opportunities to go mountain biking, play tennis, swim, do yoga and go flamenco dancing!
Getting to Vias couldn't be easier, thanks to Béziers airport and the new flights with Ryanair from the UK. The airports at Carcassonne, Toulouse, Perpignan and Marseille are all also near enough to be viable. Carcassonne is served by Ryanair; Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe; Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe; and Marseille by British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus and bmibaby. The TGV runs into neighbouring Agde... so train travel is another good possibility. The N112 runs by the town, as does the N312, with the A9 not far away either.
Property in and around Vias will often seem to be quite expensive. It's the Med, and the French Med isn't cheap. It's still less pricey than the Riviera, however, and has many of the same benefits. Saying that, though, occasionally you can find a real bargain... currently there are a number of apartments on the market priced at less than 100,000 Euros... including one for as little as 62,000 Euros!
