Villeneuve les Béziers - a canal-side village

Villeneuve les Béziers is a lovely old village that lies along the banks of the Canal du Midi as it nears the end of its journey to the Mediterranean Sea. This glorious setting, close to the great Cathar city of Béziers, the resorts and beaches of the coast, and the hills and vineyards of the Languedoc, makes Villeneuve les Béziers one of the most desirable destinations in the region.

Well equipped with a weekly market

Villeneuve les Béziers is a good sized village and has excellent amenities. Essential shops (including supermarkets) and services are present, alongside health services and a great choice of restaurants, with many more on the doorstep in the prefecture city of Béziers. A traditional market is held in the village square and streets on Tuesday mornings.

Enjoy the Canal du Midi

One of the joys of living or staying in Villeneuve les Béziers is the presence of the Canal du Midi, where the boats pass by all summer long, filled with happy holiday makers, and where the trees line the towpaths providing welcome shade for walkers and cyclists. Boat trips are available, or you can simply take a seat in the shade and watch canal life pass by in all its glory. The Romanesque Church of St Etienne is also well worth a visit in the town.

Visit charming Sète and the beautiful countryside

Getting out and about to discover the wonderful region of the Languedoc from a base in Villeneuve les Béziers can mean following the Canal du Midi. You can either go down through the Étang de Thau (a saltwater lagoon which is rich in oysters and mussels) to the charming seaside town of Sète, or inland through the beautiful countryside of vineyards and sunflowers to its beginning near the great city of Toulouse. There are many delightful villages along the banks of the canal where you can stop off for a drink or meal and spend a little time exploring.

Explore historical Carcassonne

Further places to visit in the locality are Carcassonne, with its stunning walled historical centre, and Béziers, with its rich Cathar heritage and modern tradition of creative arts. Catalan flavoured Perpignan and a whole host of smaller towns, villages and hamlets that have their place in the history of this fascinating part of France are also there to be explored.

Try white water rafting or play a round of golf

The Languedoc is a great destination for sports and outdoor activity fans. The dramatic gorges and mountains suggest adventure sports such as white water rafting and mountain climbing, while the Mediterranean Sea, the lakes and rivers allow for the gentler pastimes of canoeing, swimming, sunbathing and walking. Golf courses can also be found within a short drive.

How to get there

Getting to the area is easy and inexpensive, as there are several airports nearby, many of which are served by budget airline Ryanair. Béziers is on the doorstep, while Carcassonne, Montpellier and Perpignan are also within reach. The TGV runs to the same towns making rail travel a viable alternative. Drivers will find Villeneuve les Béziers from the D612, close to the A9 auto route.
