Villeveyrac - a special place

The village of Villeveyrac, which lies in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon in the south of France, has all the elements that make a place special. It is set amidst the vineyards from which it has created wonderful wines throughout its existence; it is close to the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea and on the edge of the lovely Bassin de Thau; and it is also near several fascinating historic towns. Villeveyrac developed around its Cistercian Abbey, where once monks made their wines. This is now not only a wonderful historical monument, but also a renowned wine domaine producing world acclaimed wines.

A southern historic village

Villeveyrac is an historic village, and one which radiates a southern, Mediterranean atmosphere in spite of being set slightly inland. The village lies not only amidst vineyards but also amidst the aromatic scrubland known as the garrigue. Its old stone houses with their shutters closed to keep out the hot summer sun, create an atmosphere that both welcomes and charms the visitor.

All amenities available for an easy life

The village has all the necessary shops and services as well as schools and health care, so everyday life is easy and pleasant. There is a superb gastronomic restaurant in addition to other cafés, bars and eateries of various types, offering something for every palate and pocket.

Visit the Cistercian Abbey Valmagne

Fans of the age old pleasures of cheese and wine will particularly enjoy visiting the fromagerie and the wine shops, with the wine domaine, cave and shop set in the beautiful Cistercian Abbey Valmagne being the piece de resistance of the village. Within the grounds of this lovely old Abbey you can also find a mediaeval medicinal herb garden, a stunning 13th century church, cloisters, formal Italianate gardens and extensive vineyards. The Abbey today hosts several cultural events as well as opening its doors to the public for tours and wine tastings.

Out and about

The Hérault is said by many to have been blessed with all the best attributes of the south, and it is hard to argue with this as you discover the many charms of this delightful region. Its climate, for one thing, is perfect, with long, hot sunny summers and short, usually mild winters. Villeveyrac is set a short way inland from the beaches of the Med, and as if this were not enough, it is also almost on the edge of the Bassin de Thau, a salt water lagoon which is renowned for its seafood and wildlife and which offers an environment that is unique to this part of France.

Explore Meze and enjoy dining in its fabulous seafood restaurants

Visit Meze, on the shores of the Bassin, where the oysters and seafood restaurants are second to none, and where the museum has an exhibit of the nests of fossilised dinosaur eggs that were discovered here. Montpellier and Béziers are also close at hand and both deserve at least a day of your time as there are endless things to see and do in these great southern cities. There are plenty of sporting activities to be found locally too, so take your pick from horse-riding, cycling, walking, golf, swimming, sailing and fishing.

How to get there

There are several airports which can be used to access the area, with destinations including Montpellier, Béziers, Carcassonne and Nîmes. Montpellier and Béziers are the closest. All are served by Ryanair, with Montpellier also being served by EasyJet. Rail travel is possible too, with TGV stops at Montpellier and Béziers. (The services to Béziers are seasonal.) Drivers should follow the A9 auto route and will then find the village on the D2.

Property prices and availability in and around Villeveyrac

Villages like Villeveyrac, which are set a short distance inland tend to offer better property bargains than those on the coast, so if the budget is tight but you still want to own property within striking distance of the Med, Villeveyrac and its environs could provide an answer.
