Argelès Plage - a beach from your dreams

The beaches of Argelès sur Mer, otherwise referred to as Argelès Plage, to distinguish the seaside resort from the old town found a short way inland (although the population figure given includes both areas), are the sort of beaches about which you dream, when, sitting in a dingy office staring out of the window at the grey skies and driving rain of the UK, you plan a holiday in the sun or even an escape to a new and happier life. Expanses of golden sand, Blue Flag cleanliness guaranteed, top of the range facilities and a near perfect sunshine record are just a part of the story in Argelès. Add to the picture a countryside of vineyards, misty mountains, pine forests and palm trees and you will have the beaches and destination of your dreams, guaranteed!

A resort which provides perfect holiday entertainment

Argelès Plage is an old hand at providing the perfect holiday entertainment for a diverse group of people, and does it as well (if not better) than anywhere in the region. There are long, sandy beaches with bars, cafés, restaurants and entertainment for all, with very good access for the disabled too, or you can escape to little secret coves, hidden from view by rocky headlands. Swimming, water sports and sunbathing are enjoyed as a matter of course in Argelès, with scuba diving being a particular favourite due to the unpolluted clarity of the sea and the abundance of marine life.

A fantastic beach, port and marina to enjoy

The main beach, all seven kilometres of it, is perfect for families, having life guards in season to keep safety of paramount importance and to enable you to relax properly, while the Blue Flag award guarantees that everywhere is beautifully clean. There's a colourful port too with a pretty yachting marina, always lively and a fun place to be.

Amenities on offer

The resort offers plenty of shops, selling everything from basic foodstuffs to local specialities and crafts, with plenty of typically seaside fun shops thrown in where you can purchase lilos, swimming masks and snorkels and beach towels. The restaurants are many and usually of an exceptionally high standard, with seafood being of course, a popular choice along with the delicious wines produced locally.

Out and about

There are so many places to visit near Argelès Plage that you will need more than a couple of week's holiday to fit it all in. Your first port of call could perhaps logically be the old town of Argelès sur Mer, just a quick hop away from the beaches, where you can enjoy a different atmosphere along with a typically Catalan welcome. Here too you can see sights and monuments from history and enjoy vibrant Catalan cultural events and festivities.

Explore Collioure and the busy town of Port Vendres

Travelling just a tiny bit further, stop off at the gorgeous fishing village of Collioure and also at the busy port town of Port Vendres, where the big commercial and cruise ships can be seen coming and going almost constantly. Enjoy superb scuba diving at Banyuls sur Mer, try wine tasting in the local vineyards or pop into the very lively town of Perpignan for a spot of serious shopping.

Visit Spain or try some skiing in winter

You can even cross the border into Spain for a day trip from here, visiting the pretty seaside resorts of the north-east Spanish coast or spend some time soaking up the culture and architecture in stunning Barcelona. Should you decide to visit in winter, although the sea may be a little cold for swimming, all is not lost as the ski resorts of the Pyrénées offer great winter fun.

How to get there

The nearest and therefore the best airport from which to access the area is that of Perpignan, which also has a TGV station enabling you to travel by rail should you prefer. Perpignan is currently served by Ryanair, Flybe and Bmi Baby. Other airports which are also within reach are Girona in Spain, Carcassonne and Montpellier. Drivers will find Argelès Plage very well signposted from the D914, the nearest major road being the A9.

Property prices and availability in and around Argelès Plage

As Argelès Plage is one of the premier resorts along this part of the coast, prices can be high. However, there are affordable options such as small studio apartments, perfect if you are only looking for a holiday apartment which can be easily rented out when not in use. Prices compare very favourably with those found along the Med in either direction, being far more expensive in north-east Spain to the west and along the Cote d'Azur to the east.
