For buying and selling property in Bages
In the heart of the French Catalan area, close to the Mediterranean Sea, sits the little village of Bages. Benefiting from the Mediterranean sunshine for which this region is famed, Bages is mainly notable for its wines and soft fruits, and is perfectly placed for a holiday base. It's not only just a few minutes' drive from the beaches of the Med, and close to the region's best loved monuments and tourist attractions, it's also conveniently close to the city of Perpignan with its international airport. The atmosphere is distinctly Catalan, which means fêtes and festivals are of great importance! The Catalans love nothing better than a good party, and the Catalan gastronomy plays a delicious part in these.
Bages has a tranquil atmosphere, dozing under the hot Mediterranean sun for much of the year. Close to the busier towns and resorts of the coast, and also to the bustling city of Perpignan, it makes a peaceful base to return to after fun-filled days out. There are a few good amenities in Bages though, so if you do just fancy a day pottering about the village and not venturing further afield, you can access most of what you'll need. There's a small supermarket, a baker's, restaurants and wine caves. Bages also has a doctor's surgery, which can be handy for those who plan to move to the village longer term. Many more shops and facilities can be found in the nearby larger towns and villages such as Elne.
It's not really a tourist attraction in its own right, but there is a little worthwhile heritage in Bages. The attractive Church of Saint André is worth a look, as is La Casa Carrère, a lovely building that now houses a small art museum.
Bages is set against a backdrop of quite spectacular scenery. The coast near to the village has some of the south of France's loveliest beaches and little coves, and they tend to be less busy than the better known beaches further to the north. The clear seas here bring their own special pleasures. There are few better places in France for scuba diving or snorkelling, and scuba diving schools abound if you want to give it a try. From many of these beaches the vineyards stretch up into the hills inland, and behind these lie glorious forests and mountains. Even the ski resorts of the Pyrénées are not far away.
The fishing village of Collioure is simply gorgeous, and no stay in this area is complete without a visit. Collioure, with its vibrant colours and Catalan culture, is renowned for its fresh fish and anchovies. It's also attracted many famous artists over the years, as this area has a special quality of light that intensifies the blues of the sea and sky, the greens of the vineyards and the red of the sun-baked tiles of the rooftops.
Perpignan is a lively, cosmopolitan city which offers a wealth of culture, shopping and dining experiences. Only slightly further away is the stunning mediaeval city of Carcassonne, a must visit in anybody's book.
The nearest airport with flights to and from the UK is Perpignan. Nearby Carcassonne is also an option. Both these cities offer large railway stations too, so train travel is another possibility should you prefer. If you are driving, and it really is a good idea to have a car to enjoy everything this area has to offer, you'll find Bages on the D612, near to the A9 motorway.
The coastal towns in this area tend to have fairly highly priced property. However, you don't have to travel far inland to find more reasonable prices, and even some great bargains. Bages is just such a place. There are some lovely properties on the market in and near to Bages at the time of writing, and the prices are a pleasant surprise. There's quite a variety of property types available too, with old stone village houses competing with modern villas for your attention.
