Cerbère - a French town with full Catalan colours

The colourful little town of Cerbère is a French seaside town that lies on the border with Spain, on the Mediterranean coast in Languedoc-Roussillon. Of all the towns in this region, Cerbère is perhaps the most strongly Catalan of all, appropriately enough for a town that lies only minutes from Spain!

A town best known for its railway station

The town is best known for its railway station, which has been of economic importance for many years. Cerbère lies on the main railway line between Perpignan and Barcelona. It is here that the gauges have to be altered and axles changed to operate in Spain.

Cerbère has a beautiful coastline

The coastline in this part of Languedoc-Roussillon is arguably the most beautiful on the French Mediterranean, and it is easy to see why. The rocky cliffs drop down to sandy beaches lapped by warm, clear blue waters... paradise. Sometimes reminiscent of the Greek Islands, the little coves and smooth seas are perfect for family days out, for relaxing, sunbathing and simply revelling in the beauty of the scenery. The solar lighthouse at Cap Cerbère is a dramatic sight, gazing out to sea, visibly keeping watch over its sailors.

Lively town life...

Cerbère may be tucked away at the very end of France, but it misses out on nothing when it comes to life and culture. Busier by far in summer than in winter, the town has a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars that keep the visitors coming every year, as well as keeping the locals happy. Although its beauty and great location make it a popular spot, Cerbère remains relatively unspoiled and traditional in outlook.

Scuba diving paradise

The clean and clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea on this part of the coast are perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling, and it is a rare day when you won't see parties of divers out enjoying themselves. There are plenty of diving schools too, so if you fancy experiencing this great sport now is your chance! The town and its fabulous natural environment brings plenty of other sporting possibilities too, with the hills and mountains of the Pyrénées nearby, the beaches, boating harbours and countryside all offering their own distinct pleasures.

Out and about

Cerbère is a fantastic spot for discovering so many different places. Whether you prefer the modern and busy ambience of Perpignan, the stunning beauty of Barcelona, the ancient mysteries of Carcassonne, the rustic charms of the little fishing villages that dot the French and Spanish coast in this part of the world, or even if your tastes run to mountain climbing or skiing, there is something here to keep you happy. Cerbère lies on the edge of Spain, in France and also in the ancient region of Catalonia... how could you ever be bored?

How to get there

Perpignan is the nearest airport, and has flights from the UK with Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Girona and Carcassonne are also nearby, both being served by Ryanair. The TGV runs to Cerbère from Paris, which makes train travel an excellent choice, and you can even continue on down to Barcelona and begin exploring north-eastern Spain.

Property prices and availability in and around Cerbère

Property in Cerbère is understandably popular, as the town has such a great location, but it is still possible to grab yourself a bargain if you keep your eyes peeled. Properties range from small studio apartments (available for budget prices of less than 70,000 Euros at the time of writing!), through to magnificent detached villas and old wine growers houses in the hills above the town.

Do you know Cerbère better than we do? Do you have photos of Cerbère?

Access: By air: Fly to Perpignan, Carcassonne or Girona. By rail: The TGV runs from Paris to Perpignan, and also from Perpignan to Barcelona, stopping at Cerbère en route!

Economy: The economy is based on the railways, with Cerbère being an important border station between France and Spain.

Interesting fact: The name of the town, although it sounds similar to Cerebus, the hound of hell, actually has nothing to do with mythology, meaning as it does, rocky outcrop, which is much more appropriate!
