Maureillas las Illas is a very pretty, ancient Catalan village which lies in the far south of France, close to the Spanish border, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Originally a Roman settlement, Maureillas las Illas is historic and traditional, offering the peace and tranquillity of a rural village, yet being close to the lively resorts of the Mediterranean Sea, in both France and Spain, and also to the Pyrénéan Mountains with their spas, ski resorts and glorious views.
The village is pretty small, but it offers good local amenities with many more available in the nearby market town of Céret, and of course, in Perpignan. Within the village itself you can find shops including bakers, butchers, a post office, newsagents, general shops, wine caves and a couple of friendly bar/restaurants. On Tuesday and Thursdays, in the mornings, local market stalls arrive and offer local produce in the square.
The views of the Pyrénées and the surrounding countryside of vineyards and cherry trees are stunning, and there are wonderful waymarked walking trails from the village. The sea isn't far from the village, where scuba diving and snorkelling are available. The clear warm waters and Marine Reserve in the sea off Banyuls sur Mer, make these great activities to enjoy here. Wine tours and tastings are also very much a part of life in the area, as the countryside is swathed in vineyards that produce some really good wines.
The world is your oyster from a base in Maureillas, or so it seems. Places to go include the neighbouring town of Céret, town of cherries, with a lively market and good shops, restaurants etc.; beautiful Collioure, a gorgeous Catalan fishing village known for anchovies and art; and the buzzing city of Perpignan, the departmental capital. Font Romeu, a popular ski station welcomes visitors for snow sports in winter, while in summer it is a popular training ground for athletes. Across the border into Spain you can enjoy a visit to the Salvador Dali Museum, the seaside resort of Roses and even the fabulous city of Barcelona, with its wonderful architectural heritage of Gaudi designed buildings.
The nearest airport is that of Perpignan, which has flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair, but other accessible airports include Girona, Carcassonne, Barcelona and Toulouse. The TGV stops at Perpignan, so rail travel is also possible, while drivers can easily find the village from the A9 auto route. It lies along the D618.
The area of Roussillon is very sought after, but prices in inland villages such as Maureillas can be lower than those at the coast, so it is worth taking a look if you are after a bargain. At the time of writing, available property in the area starts from just 28,000 Euros. In general, prices are higher than in less popular parts of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, but property holds its value well here and as the area is good for tourism, you should have no difficulty renting the property out should you wish to do so to offset the costs a little.
