Montesquieu des Alberes - near the mountains and Med

The Catalan village of Montesquieu des Alberes sits under the strong Mediterranean sun, in an idyllic location in the south of France, close to the Spanish border. The village offers spectacular views of both the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, and also of the dramatic Pyrénéan Mountains. It's a superb location for walkers, as there are botanical and mountain trails from the village.

A peaceful and friendly village

Montesquieu des Alberes is just a small village, and other than a post office, there is little in the way of shops within the village itself, apart from one attached to a bar/restaurant. There is a small market which sets up in Montesquieu every Tuesday morning though, selling fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs and meats. However, just over five minutes away you can find supermarkets and all local shops and services. Typically Catalan in character, the village is peaceful and friendly, as well as being picture postcard pretty. A ruined castle and a lovely Romanesque church add to the historic feel of Montesquieu, and the village also has a small but very interesting museum.

Wining, dining and festivals

Montesquieu has a bar/restaurant/shop (mentioned above) situated in the old post office, serving very good food in the restaurant. You can also find a wide variety of restaurants near Montesquieu, many serving fresh seafood and other delicious Catalan specialities. And throughout the year, although with a greater concentration of events in the summer, Catalan towns and villages host colourful festivals which celebrate many different aspects of their history, religion and culture, usually amidst much dancing, feasting and general merriment.

Out and about

With one of the best sunshine records in France, the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales is a great place to spend time in the open air. Even in winter, the sun is usually evident, and it can be possible to dine outdoors throughout much of the year. Things to do locally include visiting wineries for tastings and educational tours, walking or skiing in the mountains (plus a wide variety of other mountain sports), and horse-riding from Montesquieu's very good equestrian centre.

Enjoy the beaches of Argeles sur Mer or Banyuls sur Mer

The village is situated just minutes from some of the most beautiful parts of the French Mediterranean coast, and days spent in gorgeous fishing villages like the nearby Collioure or sunbathing on the beaches of Argeles sur Mer or Banyuls sur Mer are a delight which never palls. Spain too, with its lively Costa Brava resorts and the breathtaking city of Barcelona, is right on the doorstep.

How to get there

If arriving by air the nearest airport is Perpignan, though Girona in Spain is also a possibility. Perpignan is served by Ryanair, Bmi baby and Flybe. If you prefer the train, the TGV runs from Paris to Perpignan, making train travel quick and simple. Drivers will find the town from the A9 auto route and from the D618.

Property prices and availability in and around Montesquieu des Alberes

Property in this part of Languedoc-Roussillon is a little more expensive than in the inland areas, with prices rising as you get nearer to the seaside. However, that said, there is plenty of reasonably priced property around, and even the seaside areas have small apartments on the market which are quite inexpensive. At the time of writing, there is a very good village house on the market in Montesquieu for under 200,000 Euros. Top end properties are also available in this area.
