Sorède - a very special place

The beautiful village of Sorède is located deep in Catalan territory, in the south of France close to the Spanish border. The Catalan character adds spice to the tone of the village, so it is not only traditionally French, tranquil and charming, but it also exudes a frisson of excitement that shows itself on festival days and holidays, when the villagers come out to party in true Catalan fashion. You can also detect the Catalan influence in the delicious flavours of the dishes served in the local hostelries. With its ancient centre, abundant greenery and gorgeous location, Sorède is indeed a very special place.

Location, location, location

If location is everything when it comes to property, then take a long look at the location of Sorède. Set in the eastern Pyrénées there seems to be nothing that this village does not have. Mountains, Mediterranean Sea, dramatic cliffs, vineyards, olive groves, sun-baked stones and possibly the best climate in France, Sorède is truly blessed. For those who crave the bright lights of the holiday resorts or the big shops of the city, both Argeles sur Mer, with its discos and holiday fun, and the prefecture of Perpignan are on the doorstep. The fact that it is also a next door neighbour of Spain, with the fabulous city of Barcelona just a short drive away, can only add to its charms. You could call it perfect.

Village life

Sorède offers a vibrant village centre and community life, and is happy to welcome newcomers and holiday makers alike. There are all the usual shops, with bakers, butchers, post office, bars, restaurants and various fêtes and festivals held throughout the year to celebrate all aspects of French Catalan life. Tuesdays and Fridays are market days. You can enjoy open air film shows, village meals, music and dancing. Then there are the mushroom weeks, when people collect the myriad varieties of mushrooms that grow in the area and display them in the "salles des fêtes" at the weekend... but be careful to check with the pharmacy before you eat them!

Out and about

From Sorède you can walk or perhaps horse-ride through the olive groves and vineyards, play tennis or golf or simply enjoy a little wine tasting and a pampering spa treatment. In the town itself there is a railway museum and of course the whip factory to visit, an 18th church (originally 14th century) to explore, as well as the nearby 17th century Notre Dame de Château.

A little further afield

Where do you begin, in an area that offers so much variety? Do you head for Spain, with beautiful Barcelona, cheap shopping at La Jonquera, and the popular north eastern "costas"', or do you follow the "history and mystery" Cathar trail to Carcassonne, Béziers and Rennes les Châteaux? Should you swim in the warm blue waters of the Med, dine on freshly caught anchovies in the artists' town of Collioure, or ski in the snowy mountains of the Pyrénées?

How to get there

Perpignan is the nearest airport, and has flights from the UK with Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Girona and Carcassonne are also very accessible, and these are both served by Ryanair. The TGV runs to Perpignan from Paris (where you can change from Eurostar) so there is another easy and fast option available for you to get to your destination from the UK. Sorède lies between the A9 auto route and the sea.

Property prices and availability in and around Sorède

Property prices can be on the high side in the Pyrénées-Orientales, as the region has so many natural advantages, but they still compare very well with the Riviera coastal area and even inland Provence. Sorède is not cheap, but if you have an eye for a bargain and are prepared to do some renovation work, you could be lucky if you keep a close eye on the market.

Do you know Sorède better than we do? Do you have photos of Sorède?
