Torreilles - under a Catalan sun

The village of Torreilles lies under a strong Catalan sun in the far south of France, on the Mediterranean coast not far from Spain in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Torreilles manages to be at once both ancient and modern: modern in its outlook and economy derived from tourism, but traditional and full of olde worlde Catalan charm and unspoiled natural beauty.

Beach belle

The four kilometre-long sandy beach at Torreilles Plage is considered to be one of the best in the country. Awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for its cleanliness and safety, the beach is a magnet for holiday makers and locals alike in the long, hot summer months, yet it remains unspoiled and rarely seems over crowded. The setting is wild and natural, with no high rise hotels along the beachside to spoil the view, but there are a couple of bar-restaurants on the beach that can be lively in high season.

Artist's inspiration

Torreilles is traditional in style, and there is a definite sense of history in the old streets and colourful Mediterranean houses. The village has a Romanesque church and a long association with art and artists. There are many artists, sculptors, potters and photographers who have chosen to base themselves in Torreilles, and it is easy to see exactly why they made this choice. The clarity of the light in this area and the colours of the houses (with typically Catalan brightly painted shutters, red roof tiles and baskets of flowers) is perfect for inspiring artists and for nurturing creative talent.

Shopping, dining and markets

Torreilles has the lot when it comes to shops, restaurants and markets, although if you need to access a big city for more extensive facilities you will find Perpignan close to hand. Catalan cuisine is renowned throughout both France and Spain, and you will find plenty to try on the menus as well as a great choice of the region's robust and delicious wines.

Fêtes and festivals

Anywhere you go in Catalan France you will find the people always ready to party, so make sure you don't miss the numerous fêtes and festivals that take place in Torreilles and its neighbouring towns and villages. Unsurprisingly, given its artistic heritage, Torreilles hosts some excellent film and art festivals.

Out and about

If you can bear to tear yourself away from Torreilles, there are some fascinating places to see in the locality. On the doorstep you will find the city of Perpignan, the cherry producing town of Ceret, pretty mountain spa towns and some of the most dramatic scenery you will find anywhere. The beaches of the Roussillon coast are among the prettiest in France, but if you are seeking a change of scene you will find it is just a short drive to Spain, where you can visit Barcelona and the lively resorts of the Costa Brava.

Roussillon and its vineyards

Roussillon is a huge wine producing area too, so take advantage of the opportunity to pop into the many "Direct Vente" outlets found near the vineyards, where you can taste the wines and learn a little about their provenance before making your choice.

The sports scene

The sporting activities available in and near Torreilles are diverse and exciting, and include scuba diving, kite flying, skiing in the winter and horse-riding. All near enough to keep you very, very busy!

How to get there

Perpignan is the nearest airport, and there are flights from around the UK with Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Girona and Carcassonne are also near enough to be useful, both being served by Ryanair. The TGV runs to Perpignan from Paris, which makes train travel a great choice too. Drivers should take the A9 auto route and then head towards the coast.
