This thriving small town has everything you could need - and more! Villeneuve de la Raho may be surrounded by the most glorious and wild countryside typical of this region, but it's also a lively and well equipped town with plenty going on. Thursday morning sees the arrival of a traditional street market in true French style. The not inconsiderable built heritage of the town includes an ancient chapel, once the parish church, and a church from the 17th century. With wide, sandy beaches for sunbathing and calm waters for safe swimming, the town's lake is its most popular and stand out feature.
With the swimming lake on the doorstep and the beaches of the Mediterranean just fifteen minutes away, there could hardly be a better place to enjoy the outdoor life in this sun-drenched region. The clear seas offer fantastic opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling, in addition to boating, water skiing and para skiing. Other sports available locally include horse-riding, cycling, tennis and golf. Then of course, there are the mountains of the Pyrénées just a short drive distant, with ski stations, adventure sports and stunning views.
The city of Perpignan is definitely worth visiting. So much more than just a transport hub, Perpignan has a vivacious Catalan character and is packed with history, heritage and culture. Also within easy reach is the mediaeval city of Carcassonne, where history seems to spring to life every day. If you're a fan of Dan Browne, you can trace the history of the Cathar knights and maybe uncover the mystery of Rennes les Chateaux. Or, for simpler pleasures, relax in the artists' favourite fishing village of Collioure. It's a most incredible part of France that offers new discoveries each time you visit.
The Spanish border too, is within a short drive should you fancy a look at the Spanish side of Catalan life. Or slightly further afield there is the beautiful city of Barcelona, with its famed Gaudi buildings.
Villeneuve de la Raho is close to Perpignan which has arrival points by air, rail and road. The town itself is situated on the D8/D39, near to the main A9 motorway.
While property in Roussillon can be pricier than in other parts of the region, it still compares very favourably to property to the east, in Provence. Villeneuve de la Raho's popularity, based on its fabulous location, weather, accessibility and amenities, makes it a sound financial investment too.
