The little village of Dompierre les Eglises is a tranquil, pretty village set among the bucolic landscapes of the lush, green Haute-Vienne department of the Limousin region. Easily accessed from the UK, thanks to the airports and train stations of Limoges and Poitiers, Dompierre makes a delightful getaway in the country, yet remains close to busy market towns and all the attractions of the region.
With the beautiful River Brame flowing through the village, the situation of Dompierre les Eglises is delightful. The old buildings, which include the historic monuments of a 15th century church and a mediaeval castle, give a character feel to Dompierre, and the peaceful ambience pervades no matter what the season. Once a month, on the 9th, Dompierre hosts its traditional markets, and at Christmas there is an even greater treat in store when the village sets up an atmospheric and charming Christmas market.
All shops and services are easily accessed nearby, with the town of Magnac Laval just a few kilometres away. The area around the village is also home to a number of good bars and restaurants, as well as some of the Limousin's famous leisure lakes where you can swim, sunbathe, fish, sail or walk in the unspoilt environment.
The Haute-Vienne is a great department, as its position in the south of the Limousin allows you to explore eastern Poitou-Charentes as well as the northern Dordogne without travelling very far. Within the Limousin itself, must visit places include the principle city of Limoges, famed for its porcelain as well as its heritage, the tragic war atrocity town of Oradour sur Glanes, and a whole host of picturesque market towns and tiny villages.
The cities of Limoges and Poitiers both offer good arrival points from the UK whether travelling by plane or by train. Limoges Airport, which is the closest, is served by Ryanair and Flybe, while Poitiers Airport is served by Ryanair. Drivers will find Dompierre les Eglises not far from the main A20 and N145 roads, on the D61/D45.
