The little village of Fromental is set in the green countryside of the Haute-Vienne, on the banks of the River Semme. The village is pretty and tranquil, making it a lovely retreat from a busy life. Fromental is pretty small, having just over 500 inhabitants, but has one or two interesting sights. It's also close to Limoges and other major attractions.
For such a small village, Fromental doesn't do badly on sights of interest and heritage. There's the church, worth a visit for its impressive stained glass windows, and the chateau. The chateau dates from the 17th century, and is fortified and moated. And it's a listed historical monument that adds lots of character to the village.
Just outside the village is a fascinating "dolmen", or megalithic stone tomb. The Bagnol Dolmen of Fromental looks like vast a stone table. There's a parking area nearby and also space for picnicking. Not content with a dolmen, Fromental has a menhir, or standing stone too! This is called the Menhir de Fichades, and sits near the tiny hamlet of Grand Bagnol, just on the edge of Fromental. The village's final point of interest is the River Semme, which runs through its northern parts.
If you've got children, it's good to know there's a little primary school in Fromental. But you will need a car to get about for shopping and dining, though don't worry, you won't have to travel far. The nearby towns of La Souterraine (eleven kilometres) and Bessines sur Gartempe both offer a selection of shops and restaurants, and have local services too.
Fromental's rural situation and unspoilt countryside opens up lots of possibilities for outdoor activities. It's great walking country, and good for cycling and horse-riding too. The Haute-Vienne has three eighteen-hole golf courses for fans of the game, and the region's famous lakes and rivers also make it a paradise for fishermen. Leisure lakes like Vassivière and Saint Pardoux are great for sailing, swimming and other water sports.
The Haute-Vienne is a lovely department, and also offers access to the Dordogne to its south. So there are lots of opportunities to get out and about and discover sights and activities. Places not to miss include the capital city of Limoges, just a drive of 37 kilometres away. Limoges has plenty to do and see, as well as great shopping and dining. Take home some Limoges porcelain, or buy some as a gift for someone special!
Saint Benoit de Sault, 31 kilometres from Fromental, is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful mediaeval villages in France. If you want a sobering but fascinating experience, pay a visit to the memorial village of Oradour sur Glane. It's a martyrs' village, preserved just as it was the day the Nazis massacred 642 villagers and local people in a terrible atrocity in 1944.
Limoges has both an international airport and a TGV rail station, so travelling to the area from the UK is easy. Limoges airport is served by Flybe and Ryanair. Drivers can find Fromental just off the A20 toll road, on the D63.
Although the Haute-Vienne can be a little more expensive than some parts of the Limousin, it is still a good area for finding cheap and bargain property. Currently on the market in or near Fromental are properties ranging from a great building plot for just 27,000 Euros, to a lovely, fully restored house for just 281,400 Euros.
