Gorre - a green heaven

If there is such a thing as a green heaven, the village of Gorre in the Haute-Vienne department of the Limousin region lies right in the heart of it. This little village is surrounded by some of the most gloriously unspoilt countryside to be found in France, a land of lush pastures, deep woodlands, shimmering rivers and tranquil lakes stocked with trout and other fresh water fish. Gorre is small, with only some 400 residents, but it is no ghost village and visitors will find a thriving community and a warm welcome.

Although small, Gorre does offer amenities

Although many villages of Gorre's diminutive size offer no shops or facilities at all, this community is rather more appealing for holidaymakers and would be settlers in this respect, as it offers a tabac (from where the all important fishing licences can be obtained), a bakery and general store, a bar and a restaurant! Of course, there will be times when you need to access a supermarket and further facilities, but don't worry as these can easily be found in nearby towns and larger villages such as Chalus. Gorre has its own lovely fishing lake, sitting in a picturesque spot beside the village's charming 13th century church, and offering excellent fishing for very reasonable rates.

Enjoy all the activities on offer

Those considering a holiday or a new life in Gorre might look at the rural situation and nature of the village and worry that the younger members of the family may not find enough to keep them happy, but these fears are groundless as you will fast discover when you arrive. Activities such as fishing, swimming, picnicking, walking, horse-riding and cycling are easily available in this place of lakes, rivers, peaceful tracks and open countryside, and most find that their children take to these healthy outdoor pursuits like ducks to water given half a chance.

Out and about

The Haute-Vienne lies in the north-west corner of the Limousin, and offers great opportunities to explore further afield. The celebrated Dordogne is on the doorstep, just to the south-west of the department, while Poitou-Charentes with its rich supply of theme parks and historic cities is to the west and equally accessible.

Explore historical Chalus and shop in Limoges

Within the Limousin itself there are also many possibilities for getting out and about and enjoying the region. The capital city of Limoges is famed for its porcelain, and has many lovely old buildings, museums and monuments as well as great shopping and dining, while the smaller but every bit as interesting towns such as Chalus, with its lively markets and place in history on the Richard the Lion heart trail, are also good to visit.

Visit the department's leisure lakes

In addition to the fishing lakes, the Haute-Vienne offers leisure lakes where you can swim, sunbathe, picnic and walk. Sometimes you can also find tennis courts, play areas for children and more. A somewhat different day out can be had by paying a visit (and your respects) to the tragic town of Oradour sur Glane, the scene of a terrible Nazi atrocity during the Second World War, now preserved as a memorial.

How to get there

Limoges Airport is the closest airport which offers direct flights from the UK, though Angoulême, Bergerac and the new airport just south of Brive la Gaillarde, Brive Vallée de la Dordogne, are also accessible. Airlines currently servicing these airports include Ryanair, Flybe and CityJet. Limoges can also be reached by TGV, making rail travel another option, while drivers should approach Gorre from along the D21 or the D699. The nearest major roads are the N21, N141 and the A20.

Property prices and availability in and around Gorre

In spite of its growing popularity, the Limousin is still one of the cheapest places in France to buy property, and certainly one of the few remaining places where you can purchase a lake or a property with its own lake. Prices around Gorre are surprisingly cheap, and it's not hard to see why the region attracts so much interest now that it is easy to access from the UK thanks to budget airlines and new airports.
