Le Dorat is a town of great charm and character. It is most famed for its beautiful church, but the town has many interesting and historic features to discover as well as a warm and enthusiastic approach to modern life. The town is found in the Haute-Vienne department of the Limousin region in central France, surrounded by lush pasture land, lakes, rivers and woods.
The Collégiale St Pierre is one of the best examples of Roman architecture and is certainly one of the most beautiful old churches in the region, attracting many visitors to the town. Other features include the last standing fortified town gate in the region, the Porte Bergere, and some identifiable remains of the 14th century walls. The whole of the town is worth discovering, though, as there is much delightful architecture from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries to find as well as atmospheric little streets and squares.
The town is well supplied with shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as all the usual service industries that make life sweet and easy. These include a cinema, hairdressers (including a good English one), a supermarket, banks and antique and gift shops. As the town is popular with tourists and locals alike, there is a lively feel to Le Dorat, especially in the summer months when the sun is shining and a holiday atmosphere prevails.
Limousin as a whole is a great region for lovers of the countryside and of outdoor pursuits, as the entire region offers many wide open spaces and is a natural sporting paradise. In Le Dorat itself you will find facilities for tennis, table tennis and football, while nearby is a superb leisure lake, Lac St Pardoux. Here there are facilities for fishing, swimming, sailing, windsurfing, boating and sunbathing on the lovely beaches. Walkers will find themselves spoilt for choice with the thousands of country lanes and tracks, and the area is also excellent for cyclists and horse-riders as it is peaceful and undisturbed by too much traffic.
Locally you will also find many things to do even if you are not the energetic type. Visit the attractions of neighbouring Poitou-Charentes, which has a monkey park, Futuroscope and much more. Or take a trip into the past and spend some contemplative time in the memorial village of Oradour sur Glanes, where a terrible Nazi massacre took place in the Second World War. The city of Limoges is a must see too, with its fabulous porcelain shops and fascinating history.
You can fly to Limoges with Ryanair and flybe, or Poitiers with Ryanair. The Eurostar and TGV run to Poitiers, from where you can connect to a local train to Le Dorat itself. If you are travelling by car, the nearest major road is the A20, with the N147 and N145 roads being close by.
Property in and around Le Dorat is very reasonably priced, even though it remains a desirable location within the region. The countryside around the town is a great place to seek a property with land or a renovation project.
