Rural France. Peaceful little villages, sunny skies, rushing rivers, shimmering lakes and cool forests. It's no wonder so many British people, fed up with the stress of our busy, urban lives in the UK, are drawn to tranquil little villages such as Oradour Saint Genest. The village lies amid the lush green fields and woodlands of the Haute-Vienne department of the Limousin. Almost untouched by modern life, the village is a perfect base for anyone seeking the serenity of a world that so often seems lost. It is nevertheless close to shops, supermarkets and all the necessities like supermarkets and entertainment.
You won't find shops and supermarkets in Oradour Saint Genest, but you don't have to travel far to reach all the amenities you require. Le Dorat, a gorgeous small market town, is just a ten minute drive from Oradour Saint Genest, and is well supplied with small shops, bars and restaurants. The village does, however, have a very pleasant small bar, which doubles up as a restaurant at lunchtimes.
There's a fair amount of heritage to see in and near to Oradour Saint Genest. The most remarkable structure is perhaps the Lantern of the Dead, classified as an historic monument and definitely worth a visit. The church is another significant feature. Three chateaux provide even more of interest for those who enjoy built heritage.
Oradour Saint Genest is small, but make no mistake, you won't be bored should you choose to base yourself here. The region is famed for its fabulous lakes and many of these have been transformed into natural leisure areas where you can fish, swim, sail or simply relax and enjoy an unrivalled scenery. A day at a nearby lake such as that of Saint Pardoux is a great day out for all the family. There are also opportunities nearby for golf, horse-riding, hiking and cycling.
When it comes to sightseeing too, there's no lack of choice. Just 35 kilometres away is the memorial village of Oradour sur Glane, a place of pilgrimage for many. The village is preserved as it was on the tragic day in June 1944, when Nazi troops massacred its people. Tragic it certainly is, but it's a fascinating place to visit. It doesn't take too long to reach the great city of Poitiers either. Here, amongst the many monuments and shops, you will also find one of France's most acclaimed theme parks, Futuroscope. On a smaller scale, near to the village are numerous small and attractive market towns to discover and enjoy.
The city of Limoges offers the choice of arriving in the region by rail or by plane, and has the nearest airport and major railway station. Poitiers is another good option for both air and rail travellers, with the TGV stopping here. The ferry port of Saint Malo is the nearest, at a drive of around five hours. However, Calais isn't too much further (around six to seven hours) and offers more choice of ferries and prices. Drivers (and you will need a car if you are choosing a rural base like Oradour Saint Genest) can find the village on the D91/D104. The nearest major road is the E62.
If you're hoping to pick up a property bargain, this could be the very place you're looking for. Currently, you could nab yourself a five bedroom house with stables AND a lake for a paltry 256,250 Euros. Now that won't be happening anytime soon in the UK!
