Pageas, which is a small village that is found amid the rolling countryside of the Haute-Vienne, is an old village that has a truly modern attraction. In spite of its rural location and small status, having only just over 600 inhabitants, Pageas draws many visitors to enjoy the adrenaline fuelled fun of its go-kart track. The go-kart track hosts competitions as well as providing holiday fun for all ages. A lively social life is enjoyed by members in the little club house too.
Apart from this attraction, the village is tranquil and a good place to escape the pressures of modern life. It has a Romanesque church and many original houses built in typical Limousin style, but little else in the way of every day amenities. Worth a visit however, is the Bistro Pageas, a museum dedicated to wheat, bread, local crafts and beliefs… including sections on witchcraft!
The Musical Path of Pageas is another attraction to explore, being a woodland walking trail where the different woods are used for the production of musical instruments. Guided walks can be taken from the village during the summer, but should the weather turn bad you can always retire to the village library, where among the books and magazines you can also find access to the Internet.
The village lies on the edge of the Perigord Limousin National Park, and the lovely unspoiled countryside offers many opportunities to enjoy walking, horse-riding and cycling as well as fishing, swimming and boating in and on the local lakes. This makes it a good place to enjoy an outdoor activity based holiday, where the kids can run wild in safety and discover the simple pleasures of the great outdoors.
The Haute-Vienne has many attractions and working from a base in Pageas there are many things to do and places to go within easy reach. The nearest town with shopping and other facilities is that of Châlus. Châlus is a lovely old market town with a history relating to Richard the Lionheart, and in addition to its two markets (weekly on Fridays and a larger one on the second Thursday of the month), it offers a good selection of shops, supermarkets and services.
The capital city of the Limousin, Limoges, has lots to offer visitors, with heritage, culture and great shopping and dining. The history of the city is all bound up with the porcelain and enamelling industries and you can discover more about these trades in the museums and craft shops of the city. And as the Haute-Vienne shares a border with the Dordogne department, getting out and about can also take you to the well known and documented department fondly called Little England, though this name doesn't do justice to its stunning bastide towns, glorious countryside and very French customs in many parts!
The airport and train station of Limoges make it readily accessible from the UK, thanks to Ryanair, Flybe and the efficient TGV rail services that operate to and from this city. Drivers can also find the village easily from the N21 Route Nationale (toll free motorway), on the D141.
The Haute-Vienne can be a little more expensive than other parts of the Limousin, but it still has plenty of bargain property up for grabs. Currently on the market (November 2011) in or close to Pageas is a building plot for just 24,000 Euros, a great house with land and barn for only 76,300 Euros (although admittedly, the renovation isn't quite finished so you would have to shoulder a little of the work), and a host of other exciting possibilities at very reasonable prices.
