Réquista - a rural market town

Réquista is a rural market town that is surrounded by the tranquillity and beauty of the southern Aveyron countryside. Principally known for its sheep, Réquista offers an idyllic retreat from the modern world, yet is situated just some 35 km from the bustling city of Rodez. This makes it easy to access, thanks to Rodez's excellent air and rail links to the UK.

Life in Réquista

A small town which is principally concerned with sheep farming? You'd probably guess there's not much going on here then. Think again. Rural and proud of its sheep Réquista may be, but this is no dead end town. There are plenty of shops to cater for your everyday needs, and a few good restaurants too. Then there's the Thursday morning market, always a colourful and enjoyable experience to visit.

Cultural events and festivals to enjoy

And what about a social life? Réquista is no slouch here either. It may not offer nightclubs and the bright lights associated with a city lifestyle (if you want that, Rodez is just a short drive away), but it has a full programme of festivals and cultural events held throughout the year. Its most notable festival is the one held at the beginning of June each year, in honour of - yes, you guessed it, the sheep (and the famous Roquefort cheese, the area's most acclaimed product). It's a laid back, "villagey" type of fun for sure, but the atmosphere, food and drink are second to none.

Réquista's heritage

The town and the wider commune have quite a bit of interesting heritage to offer too. Réquista has a lovely church, and also an art gallery/museum. Then, around the town and its smaller dependent villages, look out for the stone crosses, often placed at crossroads, that are listed historic monuments. And it's not just the built heritage that's a special pleasure here. The natural heritage, the sweeping countryside, the rivers and lakes are all part of a spectacular landscape that never fails to beguile.

Sports and leisure activities on offer

When you are in a place of natural beauty such as Réquista and the southern Aveyron, you quickly realise that there are endless opportunities for finding new ways to enjoy the fresh air and countryside. Walking, cycling (you can hire bikes in the town) and horse-riding are all excellent ways to take in your surroundings and get to know the lovely villages along the quiet roads and tracks. If you prefer to be more adventurous, try kayaking or white water rafting. More conventional sports, in the form of tennis and golf are also available locally.

Explore all Albi has to offer and visit the spectacular Tarn Gorges

Places to visit include Rodez, of course, but this city isn't the only place worth a visit while in the area. The lovely city of Albi, which is a World Heritage site, has plenty to occupy everyone, with a wonderful cathedral, the Toulouse Lautrec Museum and a chance to enjoy the superb local cuisine and delicious Gaillac wines in a vast number of cafés, restaurants and bars. For a really awe-inspiring experience, take a trip to the Tarn Gorges. Simply unforgettable, the dramatic gorges provide one of France's most glorious sights.

How to get there

The nearest airport with flights to and from the UK is Rodez. Rodez also has good train connections to TGV routes from Paris. Drivers can find Réquista on the D902/D903/D44. The nearest motorway is the N88.

Property prices and availability in and around Réquista

Réquista and its environs offer a wide variety of properties, at all stages along the price spectrum. It's possible to find a really lovely, habitable property for anything between 100,000 and 200,000 Euros, but if you've got a bit more to spend you'll find some fabulous high end country homes on the market here too.
