Rodez Property Listings and Info

For buying and selling property in Rodez

A diverse land with gourmet riches!

The landscapes which greet the eye as you enter the area around the great old city of Rodez are as diverse and wonderful as any in France. In fact, it is said by some that they encapsulate all that is found in the whole of France, in one small area! Certainly the city lies in a land which offers lush green plains, wild rugged hillsides, rushing rivers and dramatic gorges, gentle pastures and pretty hilltop towns. You want more than this? Rodez itself is a lively, thriving centre of agricultural commerce, and offers an excellent modern lifestyle belied by the unspoiled nature of the region.

Pink Gothic Cathedral

Rodez is known far and wide for its imposing cathedral, which at more than 98 feet high and 328 feet long is one of the Catholic Church's more definite statements of absolute power. Built to stand out and stamp out any incipient heresies following in the wake of Catharism, this fabulous building is made of distinctive pink sandstone, and completely dominates the town's main square.

Museums to make time for….

Rodez has many interesting cultural sites, but two you really should make time for are the Museums of Rougère, which has a fascinating collection relating to the archaeology and history of the area, and the Denys Puech, named for Rodez's very own celebrity son, which offers a chance to see some excellent contemporary art.

Gourmet treasures and other delights

For those who like a little self indulgence, there can be few better places to settle for an evening of good wines and gourmet treats than Rodez. The city has a great choice of good eateries ranging from pizzerias to something a little more grand, so there should be a perfect dining experience for everyone. The restaurant La Taverne is said to be one of the best in the city, and offers a superb choice of good local wines for your enjoyment.

Bars and clubs

The nightlife is laid back and friendly, but there is plenty going on so you need not be bored after you have finished your meal… if you are still able to walk after all the Foie Gras, duck and strong red wine, that is! Try the Café de La Paix, or perhaps the Au Bureau, both of which have warm and laid back atmospheres and are a good place to get talking to the locals.

For the kids…

If you have youngsters who need entertaining then Rodez will not let you down. Close to the city are two great animal parks. Le Jardin les Bêtes is a huge and beautiful park with over 250 varieties of rare and popular animals. It also offers a picnic area, a playground and a Wild West village. If this hasn't worn them out, or satisfied their desire to experience more natural wonders, there is the Parc Animalier too, with wild animals such as bears, lions and wolves in natural surroundings.

And for the big kids…

Anyone with a sense of adventure will enjoy some of the more unusual sporting opportunities to be found in and around Rodez. The rivers and gorges lend themselves well to the activities of canyoning and white water sports, and the unusual rock formations create some excellent caves which are best explored with an experienced guide.

How to get there

Reaching Rodez from the UK is easy, as the city has its own airport with flights from Stansted with budget airline Ryanair. It is also possible to fly to Toulouse, which has a greater choice of airlines (British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, flybe and bmi) and departure points. The A75 autoroute runs close to Rodez, so driving from the UK is another possibility. The trip will be a long one, but the roads are excellent and there are few hold ups.

Property prices and availability in and around Rodez

Despite a recent surge in popularity and therefore in prices, property in and around Rodez is often quite reasonably priced, especially when compared with the rest of southern France. There are still some very desirable country style properties and renovation projects coming onto the market, although they do tend to sell quickly once they appear!
